Let me take you on a journey back to 1910, when the University of Dallas first burst onto the scene. Then known as Holy Trinity College, a name given by the Western Province of the Congregation of the Mission (Vincentians), who were its founders in 1905. However, come 1928, a wave of change swept over. The university was closed, and its charter packed off to the Diocese of Dallas.
Fast forward to 1955, a time filled with a renewed energy. The Sisters of St. Mary of Namur from the Western Province saw something extraordinary in the shuttered institution. Their ambition? To form a unique higher education institution in Dallas, one unlike any other. With them came Eugene Constantin Jr. and Edward R. Maher Sr., self-perpetuating independent board members who helped breathe new life into the university. When its doors opened in 1956, a group of 96 eager students stepped through.
Every story has its heroes. For the University of Dallas, it was Bishop Thomas Gorman who dreamt of shaping the university in the image of the prestigious Louvain, the Belgian Catholic University he once studied at. Who else joined the cause? The Sisters of St. Mary of Namur, Cistercian monks, Franciscan friars, and select lay professors, who used their combined expertise to form the 1956 faculty corpus.
Over the years, the university expanded its reach, introducing new programmes and schools. Among these were the Braniff Graduate School, and programs in art and English in 1966. The School of Ministry was founded in 1987 and the College of Business, incorporating the Gupta Graduate School of Management and undergraduate business, in 2003.
Recognizing the university's potential, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools provided accreditation in 1963 and reaffirmed it consistently over the years. In 1989, the institution earned a unique distinction – it became the youngest institution of higher education to be awarded a Phi Beta Kappa chapter.
There were bumps along the way, undoubtedly. The University of Dallas faced public contention for its policies concerning the LGBT community. They juggled with controversies, most notably in 2017, over a proposal to add a college, which many alumni believed didn't meet the standard.
But such instances have not defined the University of Dallas. It's stood its ground, buoyed by its continuous effort towards shaping academic excellence. Its perseverance, dedication and commitment to education are ever-evident – be it as showcased in their university seal or in their mission of "Through Truth, Seek Ye Justice."
The transformation of the University of Dallas is an inspiring tale of tenacity and dedication. It is tied closely with founding Cistercian priests and the Hungarians, contributing significantly in those first formative years. Through all the years of turbulence and triumph, they have stayed true to their mission, providing a quality education to all.
While visions of that first group of 96 students in 1956 might seem a far cry from the vibrant, diverse student body of today, it's a potent reminder of how far the University of Dallas has come – and exactly how bright the future looks for those set to walk its hallowed halls.
