History Cornell University

On a fine day of April 27, 1865, the seeds of the prestigious Cornell University were sown, thanks to the efforts of Ezra Cornell, a successful entrepreneur and New York State Senator, and Andrew Dickson White, an esteemed educator. The foundation happened after the New York State legislature officially recognized the university as the state's land grant institution. Ithaca, New York, was where the first brick was laid, on Ezra Cornell's farm, who also contributed $500,000 from his wealth as the inaugural endowment. Andrew Dickson White became the first guiding light of the university, as its president.

The initial years were challenging but equally exciting. Under the watchful eyes of Andrew White, the first two buildings of the university were erected, and he embarked on a journey to recruit the finest minds, as students and faculty. The satisficing moment came on October 7, 1868, when the university officially opened its doors to 412 pupils, embarking on the journey of fostering wisdom.

Innovation, one could say, is in the veins of Cornell University. It was among the pioneers to light up its campus using electricity generated from a water-powered dynamo in 1883, reaffirming its dedication to technological advancements. Not limited to its own campus, the research was also extended for outreach efforts, shaping the future of not just New York but the entire world.

The respectful university doesn't only create enthusiastic learners but also passionate alumni, right from its early days. Making the alumni part of its growth journey, it included alumni-elected representatives on its board of trustees.

Imagine, being part of the university that houses the Cornell University Press, founded in 1869 and being the oldest publishing enterprise in the country! Isn't it fascinating? It's not only about books and press. Cornell University became a hub for student-led publications, with the Cornell Daily Sun, founded in 1880, leading the way. Establishing traditions, the Sun today stands as the oldest continuously independent college daily in the United States.

Literary societies flourished here in the 19th century, nurturing the skills of writing, reading, and orating among students. As the U.S. Bureau of Education recognized these societies they were lauded to be on par with the traditions of the old literary societies of eastern universities.

The campus was soaked in activism during the era of the 1960s. Students stood up for cultural issues, civil rights, and protested against the Vietnam War. The campus marches and sit-ins forced a change in the university's structure and saw the resignation of its president.

Tragedy struck Cornell in 1967 as a deadly fire engulfed the Residential Club dormitory, claiming the lives of eight students and a professor.

As we leap into the recent years, the National Research Council in 1995 ranked 19 of Cornell's programs in the top 10, showcasing the exceptional academic quality the university guarantees. Not being limited to a specific field, Cornell shined across disciplines - Astrophysics, Computer Science, Ecology, Linguistics, and Material Science, to name a few.

The 21st century saw the further expansion of Cornell University as it strengthened its international presence. It opened doors for international collaboration as it partnered with institutions in India, Singapore, and China. The establishment of the 'Bridging the Rift Center', jointly operated by Cornell and Stanford University, stands as a testament to this claim.

University politics saw a notable fight against graduate student unionization in 2002. A group named At What Cost? emerged to counter the unionization drive by organization CASE/UAW. Their efforts paid off, as the union was defeated by a significant margin.

Fast forward to 2017, Cornell, always at the forefront of technology and innovation, established Cornell Tech, a graduate campus and research center located on Roosevelt Island in the heart of New York City. This was the result of a winning bid, initiated by former Mayor Michael Bloomberg to foster technological entrepreneurship in the city.

Did you know, Cornell offers over 4,000 courses as of 2023? Strive to be a part of the prestigious Cornell University today, and refine your brain cells with the enriching wisdom Cornell has to offer.
