One such visionary was Major Reuben Webster Millsaps, a Confederate veteran, who, with his great vision and financial support in the form of land and an impressive $50,000, laid the foundation of what we know today as Millsaps College during 1889–90.
Behind every great man, there's a strong supporting team. In Major Millsaps' pursuit of knowledge creation, he found it in William Belton Murrah, the first president of the college, and Bishop Charles Betts Galloway of the Methodist Episcopal Church South. They were the men behind successful early fundraising for the college and their dedication towards this noble cause led to halls being named in their honour. To this date, the college continues to affix with the United Methodist Church.
Major Millsaps' legacy though didn't end with him. His soul, along with his wife's, rests in a peaceful tomb near the epicenter of the campus he sculpted. The silence that blanketed the tomb, echoed the glorious history and sacrifices the couple made.
The pages of history turned and the doors unlocked as the world was simmering at the brink of the second world war. Millsaps College was amongst 131 handpicked sites to train the future defenders of freedom – the officers of the navy and marines. They marched in April 1943; 380 students, eager to serve their country, started their pre-medical, pre-engineering, and pre-dental training under the Navy V-12 program at Millsaps. It bloomed into a year-round training hub, sculpting 873 officer candidates between 1943 and 1945.
The echo of gunshots from a fateful day in history reverberated through the peaceful campus of Millsaps College. Jackson State University student and civil rights worker Benjamin Brown was shot dead by police at a protest. The students at Millsaps showed their solidarity, protesting against the malice. Their protest, their support, was watched and photographed by the Mississippi Sovereignty Commission.
