History Illinois College

Back in the official inception days of Illinois, John M. Ellis, a passionate Presbyterian missioner from the East, envisioned Illinois needing a transformative "seminary of learning". This ignited the curiosity of seven students at Yale College, who came riding the wave of enthusiasm to the West to breathe life into Ellis's dream.

As luck would have it, Edward Beecher, the first to wear the president's hat at Illinois College, bid adieu to his position at the prestigious Park Street Church in Boston. His arrival at the college mimicked a whiff of fresh New England air, anchoring the college's roots deeply into New England's academic traditions and intellectual foundations. Edward wasn't the only Beecher who made a mark; his author sister Harriet Beecher Stowe of the groundbreaking anti-slavery novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin fame, frequented the campus and his brother Henry Ward Beecher, prolificatically preached and enlightened the rooms of the college.

Beecher Hall, a magnificent structure named to honour President Beecher, has the distinction of being the first building to grace the Illinois College campus. It continues to stand tall, like a sentinel, reflecting the rich, vibrant history, and holds the proud title of oldest college building in Illinois.

Fast forward to 1835, Illinois College proudly celebrated the graduation of Richard Yates and Jonathan E. Spilman, the first duo to receive college degrees in Illinois. Remembering Yates for his leadership as the Civil War governor and later a U.S. senator, Illinois College rewards first-generation college-goers with The Yates Fellowship Program. Jonathan Edwards Spilman, on the other hand, cast a musical spell on Robert Burns’ poem “Flow Gently, Sweet Afton.”

With the coming years, Illinois College saw William Jennings Bryan from the class of 1881 conquering heights. He not only represented Nebraska in the United States Congress but even held the position of the US Secretary of State. The feather in his cap was the thrice-nomination in 1896, 1900, and 1908 as the Democratic Party's presidential candidate.

The corridors of Illinois College have vibrated with influential public service figures. A registry of proud alumni includes two who served as U.S. senators, twenty who represented as congressmen, six state governors, and two serving the esteemed role of federal judges.

During its formative years, Illinois College welcomed illustrious guests and lecturers like Ralph Waldo Emerson, Amos Bronson Alcott, Mark Twain, Horace Greeley, Oscar Wilde and Wendell Phillips. The college's vibrant literary societies even invited Abraham Lincoln for a speech session.

Fuelled by its strategic Northern location and vocal campus leaders, including President Edward Beecher and Professor Jonathan Baldwin Turner, Illinois College became a hotbed for the abolitionist movement. During the mid-1800s, a gaggle of students even faced indictment from a grand jury for giving sanctuary to runaway slaves. Campus buildings like Beecher Hall and the Gillett House are national symbols of the abolitionist movement, with the latter earning a prestigious National Park Service certification as a “National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom” site.

In 1903, Illinois College turned a new chapter by welcoming women students through the incorporation of the Jacksonville Female Academy. By 1906, four brave women held their Illinois College degrees with pride. The Illinois Conservatory of Music was welcomed in the same year. By 1932, Illinois College furthered its glory with the establishment of the renowned Phi Beta Kappa Society chapter, one of the precious 11 existing in the state.
