Picture this - it's the year 1883, a crisp February 22nd to be precise, and the serious faces of Gov. Edward A. O'Neal and the founding fathers of an educational endeavor are lit up with anticipation. Alabama is about to witness something grand, something meaningful - the birth of Jacksonville State Normal School. The individuals whose names would permanently be etched in the annals of this institution were the dedicated S. K. McSpadden, John M. Caldwell, James Crook, W. P. Howell, William M. Hames, D. A. Alderholt, H.L. Stevenson, W. J. Alexander, J. Y. Nisbet, L. W. Grant, and John D. Hammond. Now, obviously, you want to know who was in charge, don't you? Well, that was James G. Ryals Jr, elected the first president of the newly minted school.
However, tragedy struck just two years later in 1885. An unexpected event occurred - President Ryals was taken away in the prime of his life by the merciless hands of pneumonia. And so, another man stepped in, Joseph Harris Chappell. He held the mantle of presidency for a year before moving on to his next milestone – establishing a normal school in Milledgeville, Georgia!
Fast forward to 1886, a milestone year for Jacksonville State Normal School. It now had its first batch of graduates! What's more, it was one of the pioneering educational institutes in Alabama to boast of a campus library.
A fascinating era common among schools is change, and the Jacksonville State Normal School was no different. In 1930, the school updated its name to Jacksonville State Teachers College, and then again in 1957, it took up the moniker Jacksonville State College as it offered its first master's degree in elementary education. However, that wasn't the last of the changes. In August 1966, after much anticipation, the college was elevated to be a university by the Alabama State Board of Education. Now, it happily goes by the name of Jacksonville State University.
It hasn't been all plain sailing though. On the evening of March 19, 2018, an EF3 tornado whipped through the campus, leaving a mark on every building it swept past. No one was spared, not even the JSU Stadium and Pete Mathews Coliseum. Despite this calamity, the university dusted itself off and continued with classes from April 9, 2018, and hosted their spring commencement ceremony as planned on May 4. The colossal damage, amounting to over $100 million, demanded the attention of the President himself. And so, on April 27, 2018, President Trump declared the incident a federal disaster.
The events of that fateful day couldn't dampen the educational spirit prevailing at Jacksonville State University. Its President, John Beehler, made it clear that they would continue with their summer and subsequent semesters as planned. To this day, the University stands strong, a testament to the resilience and spirit of everyone involved. From its humble beginnings to weathering a literal storm, Jacksonville State University continues to make history. Remember, while parts of its history might be bothersome, the institution talks about resilience, strength, and moving forward. Something to take inspiration from, wouldn't you agree?
