Imagine it's 1847, a historic year where the bustling town of Hillsboro, Illinois, witnesses the birth of an educational institution destined to become a beacon of advancement and critical thinking - Carthage College. Believed to be the brainchild of visionary Lutheran pioneers, it was originally christened The Literary and Theological Institute of the Lutheran Church in the Far West. A change in the name happened swiftly, turning it to Hillsboro College – an uplift in the education landscape. The faculty of two and an eager cohort of 79 students set the ball rolling; they pledged for an all-inclusive education system, setting a foundation for an institution mirroring the finest colleges and academies.
Fast forward to 1852, the College decided to move its walls to Springfield, Illinois, and proudly adopted the name Illinois State University. It's during this time history made an interesting twist with Abraham Lincoln's brief spells on its board of trustees from 1860 to 1861, while his son Robert Todd Lincoln treaded the hallowed hallways of the institution's preparatory academy from 1853. However, the Civil War took a toll on the university's population, leading to its closure in 1868.
A fresh new dawn arrived in 1870 when the institution sprung to life again, this time in the serene ambiance of Carthage, Illinois. The college took this opportunity to be christened Carthage College, the moniker it carries with pride till this day. However, the journey wasn't smooth as it appeared. Severe financial difficulties, shifts in Lutheran synodical support, and the search for a suitable location plagued the institution.
The dramatic turn came in 1957 when the unanimous decision of its board of trustees declared the establishment of a new campus in the picturesque town of Kenosha, Wisconsin. This new chapter began with the dedication of the lakeshore campus on October 14, 1962. The following decade saw a marvelous growth phase with enrollment numbers shooting up fivefold, the endowment growing by the multiples of three, and a significant enhancement of the physical assets.
Record-breaking feats occurred in the year 1995 when Carthage welcomed 1,527 full-time students. Since 2001, the high pace of development could be assessed by the tremendous investment of over $130 million in new construction, major renovations, and technological procurement. It was also the year when the Hedberg Library came into existence and later bagged Wisconsin Library of the Year in 2004.
In 2005, the former Ruthrauff Library featured an impressive transformation into the A. W. Clausen Center for World Business. Following the trend, the opening of The Tarble Athletic and Recreation Center in 2001, and renaming the former Physical Education Center to Tarble Arena in 2009, were significant milestones. The campus saw the birth of a new student union in 2011, replacing former W. F. Seidemann Natatorium, bestowing students with superior infrastructure and facilities.
The following year was indelibly marked when the Student Union was solemnly dedicated to retiring President F. Gregory Campbell and his wife, Barbara, acknowledging their 25 years of commendable service. With the arrival of The Oaks, a beautifully designed student residence village by the Lake Michigan in 2012, students reveled in a beautiful view and exceptional living conditions.
2015 brought in a new science center to the David A. Straz Jr. Center for the Natural and Social Sciences. Top-notch labs, inviting classrooms, sophisticated faculty offices, and comfortable student spaces catapulted the institution into a new sphere of education. The campus introduced an upgraded residential experience with The Tower in 2018, offering students apartment-style suites and communal spaces to learn and collaborate.
