The man was a tree hugger—literally! This was the guy who donated 53 acres of tree-ful land which became the cradle of what we now call Kent State University. Not bad for a fella who made his wealth in shaving paraphernalia, huh?
Now, did you know the school lurched into life as a teacher-training school? Yeah, that sleepy town in Ohio suddenly had a spectacle on its hands. The Kent State Normal School was a busy hive buzzing with aspiring teachers. It made an exponential leap, from having 144 students in its starting year to accommodating more than 800 by 1929.
