Founded in the year 1890, Keuka College, the brainchild of visionary George Harvey Ball, was born out of a dream to grant deserving students a premier education, unrestricted by their economic situation. This institution launched its scholastic journey on August 14, 1890, with a remarkable academic building. As reported by the New York Times next day, it stood majestically, four stories high on one of Keuka Lake's exquisite sites. Eighty ambitious and excited students made up the institution's maiden batch of freshmen in Fall 1890.
Even with such promising beginnings, Keuka College struggled financially and had to pause active instruction in 1915. A ray of hope emerged in 1919 when Arthur H. Norton, the namesake of the Norton Chapel, took over as the college’s president with the aim to breathe new life into the college. Norton, exhibiting remarkable determination, penned over 3000 letters, distributed at least 10,000 brochures, delivered 66 speeches, and evaluated 76 other colleges between 1919 and 1921 to rally support for Keuka. The college's educational journey recommenced under Norton's guidance in 1921, this time as Keuka College for Women.
Throughout these tough times, Gertrude Martin, the previous dean of women at Cornell University, provided advisory support to the new women’s college. Keuka's revival was generously supported by the Ball Brothers, the men behind the S&P 500 company, Ball Corporation, and benefactors of Ball State University. Their relationship with Keuka and its founder George Harvey Ball dates back to their youth, when Uncle George acted as a father figure and financial supporter to the young Ball brothers after their father's demise. This sustained support from the Ball family led to the renaming of the first academic building as the Ball Hall in 1921.
Keuka College continued on its upward trajectory with the construction of the Hegeman Hall and Richardson Hall (later renamed Harrington Hall) in 1924. These edifices flanked the Ball Hall from either side and remain a vital part of the campus. Interestingly, during World War II, Keuka expanded its nursing program in response to the need for professional nurses. The curriculum, coupling conventional classroom learning with clinical hospital training, was noteworthy and credited to the correspondence between college President J. Hillis Miller and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt.
Fast forward to June 16, 1963, a day etched in our memory when the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered the baccalaureate address at our college and was honoured with a Doctorate of Humane Letters. Busts of both dignitaries, Roosevelt and King, commemorate their visits on campus, creations of the esteemed Dexter Benedict, a professor emeritus of art at Keuka. In 1985, faced with a downhill slide in enrollment figures (drop from 536 to 407 students between 1979 and 1984), the college's board of trustees decided to welcome men. This prudent decision bolstered enrolment exponentially to over 1,100 students by 2021.
As we moved into the late 2000s, contributions from alumni and well-wishers enabled us to restore our crowning glory—the Ball Hall. The three-year painstaking renovation of this historical building was applauded and awarded a Citation Award by the American Institute for Architects-Central New York in 2008. Another feather in our cap is the Keuka Commons, dedicated in 2016. This state-of-the-art building hosts the Division of Business and Management, the Center for Professional Studies, the Wertman Office of Digital Education, the Center for Business Analytics and Health Informatics, contemporary classrooms, study spaces, the campus bookstore, and the Wolf Den Café.
Keuka College also prides itself on the Field Period program, an initiative of Keuka graduate and administrator, Edith Estey in 1942. This scheme requires every student to dedicate approximately a month or 140 hours per year to a self-directed learning experience. What's more, students are free to choose the nature of their experience, whether it be a work internship, a community service project, an exploration of spiritual aspects or cross-cultural diversity, or a group cultural experience to an alternate city or country.
The Field Period can be completed during the summer break or winter break, with January being a month off for students. A learning contract, outlining specific learning goals and objectives, is made with the respective site of each student's choice. And if you're wondering, it's not all play. The performance, work ethics, and progress of students are evaluated by the site supervisor who then feeds back to Keuka College's Experiential Learning office.
Donald Asher, in his book, Cool Colleges: For the Hyper-Intelligent, Self-Directed, Late Blooming, and Just Plain Different, extols Keuka College for masterfully
