West Virginia University, or WVU as fans fondly call it - a place that popped up on the map way back in 1867. Now, isn't that imagine? The university came to life right in the heart of the American Civil War. Interestingly, son, it was actually designated a land grant university under the Morrill Act - a piece of legislation kicked off - to help folks get their paws on an education. And boy, did it succeed!
So, reverend Alexander Martin was the chap who had the smart idea to get things rolling. He began quite humbly, can't say too posh, with just six faculties and six students! A small number, ain't it? But everything starts small, lad. Under his dynamic leadership, the university started teaching agriculture, engineering, and military tactics - not mere bookish knowledge, I tell you.
Fast forward to 1891, and this fella named Jerome Hall Raymond entered the scene. This gentleman was a cut above the rest. He gave nod to the opening of WVU's first ever medical school, talk about progress! From then onwards, WVU’s journey was upwards and onwards, with an expanding curriculum that captured the attention of international students from all around the world.
WVU, in 1922, stepped up its game with the inauguration of the first university airport (WVU Jackson's Mill State 4-H Camp). I bet it’s the only university you know of that welcomed its students by air!
Then came the golden year of 1950. This is when WVU became coeducational, opening its doors wide with a warm smile to female scholars from across the globe.
The university, much like a Bollywood movie, had its fair share of plot twists. You won’t believe it, but in 1966, a controversial decision to celebrate 'Mountaineer Week' was taken. Now, every year, the university is painted in colours of tradition, showcasing the rich heritage and beauty of West Virginia and the Appalachians.
Mr. Peter McGrath in 1985- the university’s popular bloke - introduced a 'University 2000' strategic plan with the aim of making WVU a world-class institution, and boy did he succeed! Today, over 27,000 students from around the globe are busy scribbling notes in peaceful tranquillity of Morgantown.
Year 2001, the university thinks, why not reach for the stars, quite literally. First-ever Forensic and Investigative Science Program was launched – it's like a Saas-Bahu soap opera with all the drama of crime solving.
As of now, after 100 plus years since its inception, WVU has become a vibrant, diverse hub offering a plethora of courses with minute attention to students’ interests and aptitude. And lest not we forget, it has also nurtured many eminent personalities.
Shaped by triumphs and trials, the journey of WVU has indeed been a fascinating one. From a small entity to a globally recognized institute, we bet it's been quite a roller coaster. Alright lad, time to fly. But remember, as they say over there, "Once a Mountaineer, always a Mountaineer!"
