History University of Rhode Island

Let's set the stage back in 1888 where our tale begins - the University of Rhode Island (URI) first graced the world. Then, it was modestly known as the Rhode Island State Agricultural School, aiming to pervade agricultural knowledge associated with the state agricultural experiment station. Picture this - it was nestled in the site that was once the charismatic Oliver Watson Farm in Kingston. The legacy of the place remains preserved, with the yesteryear farmhouse presently adorned as a quaint museum.

Visit 1892 in your imagination, a milestone year for URI. It was during this time, the institution transformed into the Rhode Island College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. Not just the name, the academic courses were also revamped, extending from two years to the usual four-year span. Our URI chooses this year as its proud foundation date. The first batch? A small, intimate group of seventeen individuals, each navigating through their respective courses in an agile two years timeline.

Fast forward to 1909, and the college witnessed another significant chapter. Now christened as Rhode Island State College, the campus was stretching its wings beyond the realms of agriculture. The institution was ready to offer a wider range of programs - educating young minds with an enhanced curriculum.

Advancing towards 1914, the college's history gets an extra dash of uniqueness. A dash the world needs more of - diversity. Welcome Harvey Robert Turner, the first African American student to walk URI's historic corridors. He was not just any student; an all-rounder, Turner was a civil engineer major, a part of the college's football and track teams, and a proud graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree. His journey further took him to Prairie View A&M University, teaching young minds and serving as a treasurer.

Jump to 1951, a year that marked yet another evolution for our institution. Given its modern title - the University of Rhode Island - through an act by the General Assembly, the university expanded its academic purview by adding the College of Arts and Sciences and opening up doctoral degrees. The added weight of the doctorate was like a feather in URI's growingly embellished cap.

Experience 1981, under the presidency of Frank Newman, a year symbolizing a shift in authority. Yes, the reins were now held by the Board of Governors for Higher Education, appointed by the governor himself. But change, as they say, is the only constant. The Board of Governors saw itself replaced by the Rhode Island Board of Education in 2013, which in turn made way for a 17-member Board of Trustees in 2019.

Sticking to the trail of progressive stride in 2013, the faculty took an influential decision. A decision to walk the talk of true scholarship and created an open-access policy. The aim - to make the institution's profound and treasured scholarship publicly accessible online.

When talking about URI, how could we not mention the incredible individuals that have held the helm? A total of twelve leading lights served as president and three commendable figures held the position of acting president. And who's strolling in the president's office? Marc B. Parlange. He's been at the helm since August 2021 and continues to guide this prestigious institution as it enters its next exciting chapter.

So, there you have it - URI's journey from its humble beginnings as a small agricultural school to a full-fledged, diverse, and inclusive institution that it stands proud as today. Do you feel the historic vibes?
