Once upon a time, back in 1947, there wasn't much hue and cry about technology-based educational institutes. Yeah, I know right, hard to believe! But it's true, an initiative was sparked off, a forward-thinking change was about to come. And that's when Oregon Institute of Technology, or as youngsters fondly call it, Oregon Tech, was born. The seeds were sown by Winston Purvine, the first and, I must say, a pretty visionary president of the institute.
Who would’ve thought that a place which started with humble origins in a decommissioned Marine hospital in Portland, could grow into a full-blown, tech-savvy university, standing tall in the Klamath Falls? But, well, surprises come in all packages, don’t they?
By 1954, the need of hour, umm, no, the need of the students, demanded an expansion. And, like the cherry on the cake, the institute moved to Klamath Falls. What a swift move it was, by the way. Almost felt like a superhero flick. Anyways, moving on.
Alright, so the 70s and the 80s were like the teenage years for Oregon Tech, full of energy, ambitions, dreams, and achievements. Imagine that! Getting its own license as a separate degree-granting body? Talk about a growth spurt. And then, you know it, right? The amazing addition of the first bachelor's degree in 1977? And ooh, the cherry on top, its transformation into a polytechnic university in 1981! Way to go Oregon Tech.
But, what’s a story without a little bit of drama and suspense, amirite? So, here’s an interesting twist. In 1989, our spot-on, braveheart Oregon Tech was almost merged with the Oregon University System. I bet you didn’t see that coming.
But, well, that’s our hero, never to give in. It stood tall, backed by the sturdy support of its staff, students and surprisingly, even the folks of Klamath Falls. They came all together to save their beloved institute. Quite a nail-biter, wasn't it?
Anyway, by the 1990s, as colourful as the era itself, the institute started shining on the national front with its techy colors. Say hello to the dedicated student software development team and the health informatics department. Plus, can't forget when the first master's degree program waved hello in 1996, can we now?
But don’t think it was all work and no play, the fun was never forgotten - after all, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, right? Hence, in 2004, the athletic division of the institute got promoted to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. Talk about balancing act.
In the last decade or so, Oregon Tech oozed out more success stories than one could count. From the opening of the amazing state-of-the-art Wilsonville campus in 2012 to the launching of 'Oregon Renewable Energy Center' in 2016, the institute dated success like a serial dater! And, do you know the latest buzz? Oregon Tech is one of the top polytechnics in the US now!
So, my dear friends, that's our Oregon Tech for you. A hero of its own tale, rising from a small dream to a grand vision, heading towards a future brighter than the sunshine itself. So how about you raise a toast to this brilliant institute? Because, as they say in our mother tongue, 'Safalta ki kahani ko salaam!'
