Picture this, it was the very same year that Wisconsin became a state, talk about timing! They didn't waste a breath, did they? It all started with a mission for creating public leaders and improving the lives of the state's citizens.
John H. Lathrop was the man in charge, the starting boss if you will. He began the ball rolling in 1849. His leadership was the kick-off for the University, setting it in the right direction. Things didn't kick off with a bang though, in the beginning only 20 students were admitted.
1866 brought a paradigm shift. That's the year when women said a big 'how-do-you-do' to education at University of Wisconsin. This groundbreaking move made it one of the first major universities in the US to accept women. If that ain't progressive, I don't know what is!
