History Biola University

Picture this - the year is 1908, Lyman Stewart, the reigning president of California's Union Oil Company, joins force with two Presbyterian ministers and authors, Thomas C. Horton and Augustus B. Prichard. Together, they plant the first seeds of what would eventually grow into the renowned Biola University, initially named the Bible Institute of Los Angeles.

Fast forward a few years to 1912, R.A. Torrey becomes the appointed dean of the institution. The following year, construction breaks ground on a striking edifice in downtown Los Angeles, distinguished by its two monstrous neon signs that lit up the night with the words "Jesus Saves". Each day, the soft hum of 11 hymn-playing bells echoed from a carillon lodged at its heart. Couple this with an auditorium that housed 3,500 seats, and the vision of the founders comes to life.

These pioneers had a unique vision for education. They wanted to provide training that zeroed in on the Bible and missionary work, a concept different from the standard curricula of typical Christian liberal arts colleges. Imagine a two-year programme, upon completion of which students were awarded a diploma - this was the approach our founders took, fortified by their inspiration from the Moody Bible Institute.

As the roaring 20s set in, attempts to broaden the curriculum were made. However, they bore fruit only in 1949 when the name "Biola College" was adopted, which later morphed into "Biola University" in 1981. The university shifted addresses, and in 1959, set up camp in La Mirada, California.

The institution embraced conservative theology, an idea documented in a four-volume treatise titled "The Fundamentals: A Testimony to The Truth" dated 1917. Then, as we move to the mid-20s, we find John Murdoch MacInnis as the university's second dean. His term, however, was far from stable. His book, "Peter the Fisherman Philosopher," invoked a national controversy, prompting accusations of liberal theology promotion. Consequently, MacInnis was forced to resign at the tail end of 1928, and every existing copy of his book was destroyed.

Despite the controversy, diffidence never overshadowed Biola's spirit. With Charles E. Fuller, a Biola graduate, as their vice president, they sailed into the 30s appointing Elbert McCreery and William P. White, both having affiliations with Moody Bible Institute, as their new dean and president respectively.

The Great Depression, however, tried to throttle the blossoming institution's growth. The tides turned in 1932 when Louis T. Talbot assumed presidency. He also held the title of pastor of the Church of the Open Door, and his leadership rekindled the university's financial vigour.

As decades rolled on, Biola didn't only survive but flourished with numerous additions. Their ventures included the establishment of Talbot Theological Seminary, Biola's first graduate school, procurements of graduate programs from Rosemead Graduate School of Professional Psychology in 1977, the introduction of the School of Intercultural Studies in 1983 using funds from China's Hunan Bible Institute, inauguration of a School of Business in 1993, and the launch of a School of Education in 2007.

Today, Biola's storied past echoes within its halls, standing as a testament to its evolution. It serves as a beacon of hope, perseverance, and resilience, consistently inspiring the students lucky to be a part of its illustrious journey. It's more than a university; it's a space where young minds are nurtured to become tomorrow's leaders.
