History University of La Verne

Did you know that the prestigious University of La Verne has a history that goes back over a century? Yes, it's true! Picture this - it's the year 1891 and members of the Church of the Brethren, a Christian sect with German roots, stepped forward to lay foundation for Lordsburg College, later to be known as our university. This church historically identifies itself as a peace church, just like the Quakers and Mennonites. Even today, a seat or two is left open on the Board of Trustees for members of the Brethren, keeping traditions alive.

The college was born in a hotel, yes, an actual hotel building right at the corner of 3rd Street and D Street in La Verne, California, then known as Lordsburg. The hotel, caught in the dying embers of Southern California's land-boom, never had its rooms warmed by a single guest and soon found itself repurposed as a college in 1899 by two visionary Church members, who bagged the property, plus a whopping 100 city lots for a sweet deal of $15,000. In 1928, right after Founders Hall was ready, the original building bid farewell and was demolished.

Though our beloved university shines bright today, did you know there were times when its light nearly flickered out? Back in 1901, a Los Angeles Times report warned of an ominous forecast, predicting the college's early demise. Student strength had dropped to a mere 12, hardly two up from the faculty count, and scandals surrounding its administration were creating significant negative buzz. But, as they say, diamonds form under pressure.

The college's first president, E.A. Miller, faced a scandal in Virginia which seemed to follow him to California. Adding to this was the resignation of William Hoover, the school's fourth president, leaving the institution's image somewhat tarnished. The institution relaunched itself as La Verne College in 1917, following the changing of Lordsburg to La Verne. Determined to overcome its troubled past, the college, 87 years after its founding, restructured in 1977 and emerged as the University of La Verne.

A remarkable journey since its humble beginnings, the University of La Verne has grown to include the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business and Public Management, the LaFetra College of Education, and the College of Law. Making strides in academic offerings, it handed out its first master's degree in 1965 and by 1969, its first doctoral degree as well. It opened doors to adults seeking education in 1969 and extended it’s presence by inauguraling its first regional campus at Orange County in 1981.

In 1975, kids of US military personnel got to experience La Verne’s premium education at a campus set up in Athens. This was in operation until 2004, earning the reputation of being "one of the best private, English-language institutions in Greece". However, due to financial reasons, President Stephen C. Morgan had to make the difficult decision of shutting it down, giving students and faculty a 48-hour notice to wrap up.

The University of La Verne embraces its Church of the Brethren heritage but stands tall as a non-sectarian institution today. Rich in history and resilient in the face of trials, it shines bright, illuminating the lives of students who come here, looking for their own path to shine. Is there an end? Certainly not, as history teaches us, La Verne's just getting started.
