Let's take a step back in time, folks, to 1885. That's the year Arizona State University, or ASU, sprouted up in the desert like a cactus. But its story begins a bit earlier. A group of smart folks, led by Judge Joseph Kibbey and many others, decided Arizona needed a place for higher learning. The concept of a university, at this time, was as unfamiliar to people as a monsoon in the summer.
So when the Territorial Normal School popped up in Tempe, it was as surprising as a cactus blooming in the desert. The first class in 1886 - imagine that was 135 years ago – had a whopping 33 students. Sure, it might not sound like a lot, but that was a quite chunk of the population seeking knowledge.
In 1903, the school experienced its first glow-up, becoming the Tempe Normal School. Did it stop there? Not even close! By 1924, it spun its charkha (spinning wheel) a bit more and evolved into Tempe State Teachers' College, offering four-year degrees. No more being just a 'normal school'!
The merry-go-round didn't stop spinning there. By 1945, the institution was ready for another naming ceremony. It transformed into Arizona State College. That small seed of an institution planted in 1885 was maturing, just like a teen becoming an adult.
Every desert has a rainstorm and ASU had its share when a vote for university status in 1958 was vetoed by the Governor. You could think of this as the dramatic plot twist in our tale. But true to its fighting spirit, ASU didn't back down. The people of Arizona voted in 1958, and like a Phoenix, the institution rose from the ashes as Arizona State University. Bet that Governor was eating his words!
By the start of the 21st century, ASU's glow-up was, in the words of the young folks, ‘on fleek’. The R.E.D project in 2002 and the infusion of $800 million for various ventures gave ASU the spice and tadka that every Indian dish needs! From Nano-technology to Biodesign - ASU was a university making a global impact.
It's been an exciting journey for ASU, that started as a small school in a desert town. The leap it has made would stun even the most skilled kabaddi player. Today, ASU stands tall with over 100,000 students and is now ranked one of the best in the nation for innovation – quite the achievement!
The tale of ASU is as enticing and engaging as an IPL match. And just like the best cricketers, this institution is always ready for upping its game. From a school in the desert to a cutting-edge university, ASU has become a beacon of education, even brighter than any Diwali celebration. You might just say it's ASU-mazing!
