The story of the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design (RMCAD) started back in the year 1963, masterminded by a man named Philip J. Steele. He wasn't just anyone; he was an artist, a creator, a visionary. And he also happened to be an educator. Now, a good story always has its plot turns and this one was no different. In a key month of that year, January, our protagonist Steele made a move that would set things in motion.
He bought an artistic venture known as the Art for All Studios school, a flourishing enterprise under the stewardship of Dorothea Seeley Shulenburg, a renowned personality born in 1901 and breathed her last in 1975. Not just did he buy the institution, but he also renamed it to "Rocky Mountain School of Art". Catchy isn't it? But every story, as you know, is made of several smaller tales.
On September 11, 1972, Steele made another significant move. He incorporated the school, a step up that added more weight and standing to the institution. But like every flourishing establishment, the Rocky Mountain School of Art outgrew its boundaries. So on to the relocation phase; actually let's call it the quest for the ever-expanding horizon.
The Rock Mountain School of Art, now rapidly growing, relocated several times, seemingly riding the wave of its increasing enrollment. Did you visualize it yet? Good. Moving along, by 2003, it shifted its location from its three-building base in Denver to a considerably larger location in Lakewood suburb. Impressive, right? But wait, here's where the plot thickens.
Come 2010, a consortium of investors, sharing ownership of Full Sail University, decided to join the journey. They bought a controlling share of the college from the Steele family and initiated a project to restructure the entire entity. This is what we call a plot twist. Here's more. In the year 2014, amid turnover of notable faculty members, RMCAD rescheduled its in-person campus courses in an attempt to align them with online classes. As another cost-cutting measure, it took the drastic step of moving most liberal arts courses online. The times they were a-changing indeed.
Where do we stand now? Well, RMCAD is currently affiliated with Full Sail University. Like any great story, the story of RMCAD has had its ups and downs. But through it all, it faced the storm and marched on. So now you know not just the how but also the why behind RMCAD's history. Like any good story, we're left with one question: What's next?
