Our tale begins in the breezy year of 1787, when four stalwarts, John King, Nathan Albertson, William Eagler and Caleb Bruner, decided to stretch their wings and establish what was first known as "Franklin College." The name was an admirable hat-tip to the eminent statesman, Benjamin Franklin, who, interestingly, had no hand in starting the college but generous as they come, donated a hefty 200 pounds towards it.
Shaping the cornerstone of history, Franklin College was one of the first institutes of higher learning that opened its door to students irrespective of their religious denominations. Talk about sticking your neck out for diversity, right? Now, that's a cool innovation way-back-when! And while we're on the subject of inclusivity, Franklin College was ahead of the curve, welcoming international students since the early 1800s. Yes! Truly, a global hangout spot before the term "globalization" even hit the mainstream!
The plot thickens in 1853, when a chap named James Buchanan, who wore the glorious label of being the only U.S. President from Pennsylvania, decided to plonk down quite a bit of cash to merge Franklin College with Marshall College. Fusing together, it formed what we now know and love as Franklin & Marshall College, or F&M, if you prefer some college shorthand.
A quick backstory, Marshall College was named after the famous Chief Justice John Marshall. So core lesson learned here, folks - when it comes to naming an institute, always choose a heavyweight personality. It definitely adds an edge to your college application.
