The story of Cairn University starts over a century ago, when W. W. Rugh made a noble move on July 8, 1913. Making a significant transition from public school teaching, he founded the Bible Institute of Philadelphia. A branch of the National Bible Institute of New York, this institution aimed to teach the Scriptures every day, inspired by Rugh's experience of conducting Bible classes in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
Meanwhile, an influential conference was taking place in Philadelphia, steered by two prominent Bible teachers, C. I. Scofield and William L. Pettingill. It wasn't just another conference, but one that sparked requests for a permanent school to maintain their teachings. As a result, on October 1, 1914, they established the Philadelphia School of the Bible (PSOB). Scofield, a globally esteemed Bible teacher, became the first president of PSOB, with Pettingill as the first dean.
Fast forward to October 8, 1921, Rugh's school broke away from New York's influence, rebranding itself as the Bible Institute of Pennsylvania (BIOPA). The mission of both BIOPA and PSOB was to empower lay people with Scripture knowledge for church and community service, but back then, they did not provide any degrees.
As 1951 rolled in, a major change happened. BIOPA and PSOB merged, becoming the Philadelphia Bible Institute (PBI) and moved to the YWCA Building at 1800 Arch St. The first president of PBI was appointed, William A. Mierop from BIOPA, and Clarence E. Mason, Jr from PSOB became the academic dean. Despite offering just a three-year Bible diploma initially, by 1958, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania gave PBI the green light to run a four-year program leading to the Bachelor of Science in Bible degree. This milestone marked the transformation of PBI into the Philadelphia College of Bible.
Over time, the institution's academic offerings widened, with the authorization to grant two more degrees - Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Social Work - during the 1970s. Students were required to take 55 credit hours of Bible, doctrine, and "Bible college distinctive" courses.
Throughout its history, Cairn University has been under the successful leadership of five presidents starting from William A. Mierop in 1951 to its current president, Todd J. Williams, who started his tenure on January 1, 2008. The appointment of W. Sherrill Babb as president, coincidentally, brought a big change - a move from Center City, Philadelphia to a brand new campus in Langhorne Manor.
Under the guidance of Babb, in 2000, the college attained university status from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and it was renamed as Philadelphia Biblical University. During Babb's tenure, there was a considerable growth in the number of degrees offered, Graduate programs implemented, extension campuses established, and a notable expansion in student enrolment, faculty, and facility space.
Then came 2007, marking another turning point with the introduction of a new core curriculum. This change brought about a shift in the educational approach and a significant development in the arts and sciences and professional curriculum. Less than a year later, on January 1, 2008, the former President W. Sherrill Babb became the University's first chancellor and Todd J. Williams, former provost, stepped into his shoes as the University's fifth president.
Under the guiding hand of President Williams, the university went on to expand its academic offerings even further. Notably, in 2010, a Master of Business Administration degree got approved by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Professional minors in Education, Music, Social Work, and Business were also added in 2011, along with a noticeable growth in co-curricular programs like the Arts Initiative and the Center for University Studies.
In October 2011, an essential decision was taken to reduce the time and costs for undergraduates to complete their studies. The board of trustees voted to allow students to pursue a B.S. in Bible degree, a professional degree (B.S. in Business Administration, B.S. in Education, Bachelor of Social Work, Bachelor of Music), or both concurrently.
Fast forward to April 18, 2012, it was announced that the School would be renamed as Cairn University, symbolizing memorials and trail markers that bear witness to God’s faithfulness. Approved on June 8, 2012, by July 16 it was officially known as Cairn University.
However, nothing remains constant, as shown when the University decided to close its Social Work program for new students in 2021, while allowing the existing students to finish their course. Despite all these dynamic changes, Cairn University maintains its mission of imparting holistic education to its students, rooted in the word of God.
