Davenport University, my friend, is not some Johnny-come-lately institution, No siree! It first opened its doors in January of 1866 over 155 years back. Now, how's that for being, long in the tooth? The man behind the show was a chap named Conrad Swensburg, a visionary Union Army Veteran, who had the chutzpah to kick start this after the American Civil War just to put education back on track. Now that's something, ain't it?
Well, it all started in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The good ole Swensburg had one goal in his mind, 'Building opportunities for a better tomorrow.' His dream with feathers was christened Grand Rapids Business College, a modest institution offering classes in arithmetic, bookkeeping, business law, and telegraphy. Sounds like fun, don't it? Nothing like a little bit of signal scrambling to start the day off with a bang!
But our story ain't over yet. Time was flying like a hoot owl in the moonlight, and by the 1880s, the college got itself a brand spanking new owner, one Michael E. Davenport. I swear, when the torch got passed to Davenport, the real magic started happening. The college was re-christened Davenport School of Business, and Mr. Davenport, like a vengeful god, came up with the motto: "Make a Living, Not a Life."
Fast forward a few decades to the 1960's, and once again the old switcheroo happened. Go-getter Robert Sneden scooped up the reins and added a whole bunch of new courses including fashion merchandising, and wait for it...computer programming! Now, we're humming along with the times!
Meanwhile, flash-forwards to 1977, a fateful year it was because the Davenport College of Business (as it was known by then after another name change in 1961) become big news, ain't it so? They started getting their graduates to do sit up and take notice. In 1977, the college earned accreditation from The Higher Learning Commission, now that's a feather in your cap!
Fast forward to 1989: Davenport saw another interesting turn of events as it merged with Detroit College of Business, spreading its wings to more locations and more hearts. Throughout the 1990s, Davenport kept on growing like a weed, merging with other institutions, and one by one, building multiple campuses across Michigan.
Then Boom! Mark the year 2005 in your memory mates. It's the year Davenport shook the daisies, ditched the ‘college’ tag, and came to be known as Davenport University. It added a broad range of undergraduate and graduate programs and turned into a more comprehensive educational institution.
