History St. Andrews University

Imagine it's 1410, a group of Augustinian clergy found themselves torn away from the University of Paris due to the Avignon schism and from Oxford and Cambridge because of the Anglo-Scottish wars. The clergy, in their wisdom, decided to form a society dedicated to higher learning in a little-known place called St Andrews. Here, they didn't just focus on religion but also offered courses on logic, philosophy, and law.

Their hard work was rewarded on February 28, 1411, when Bishop Henry Wardlaw graced them with a special charter. Pope Benedict XIII too was swayed by Wardlaw's petitions, and in 1413, he granted St Andrews the status of a university. King James I of Scotland was equally supportive, confirming the university's charter in 1432. Indeed, the kings of Scotland always had a soft spot for the university.

Progress was constant at St Andrews. In 1418, two gents, Robert of Montrose and Lawrence of Lindores, founded St John's College for theology and arts. Next was St Salvator's College, tailored for the aristocracy by Bishop James Kennedy in 1450. Then comes St Leonard's College, set up in 1511 by Archbishop Alexander Stewart to be distinctly monastic in character.

The 16th century witnessed a massive overhaul. Cardinal James Beaton refocused St John's College on divinity and law studies. He rechristened it St Mary's College in 1538 to maintain Catholic teachings. But the Scottish Reformation in 1560 turned tables, and it became the bedrock for Protestant clergy.

The 17th and 18th centuries had their highs and lows, with St Andrews on the brink of collapse in 1747 due to severe financial crunch and socio-religious unrest. Student numbers plummeted, pushing St Leonard's College into dissolution and merging with St Salvator's.

Change arrived with the 19th century. In 1876, the university opened its doors to women, offering an education equivalent to the Master of Arts degree. It gave birth to a scheme called 'LLA examination' or Lady Literate in Arts. This was a fresh approach, women learned via correspondence over several years, with educators in their hometowns guiding and testing them.

Further progress was made in 1889 when the Universities (Scotland) Act made it possible for St Andrews to formally admit women. By 1892, the university had even established a ladies' school. One Agnes Forbes Blackadder became the university's first woman graduate in 1895, obtaining an MA. The university appointed its first female lecturer, Alice Marion Umpherston, in 1896.

The start of the 20th century saw a shift in the university's educational offerings, from classical languages and divinity to more practical fields like science and medicine. This was done to increase student numbers and ease financial strain.

St Andrews also had a long-standing relationship with America, with former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton taking part in the academic celebration marking the 600th anniversary of the university's founding in 2013. Today, St Andrews continues to foster its relationships with the United States and maintains a significant presence in its higher education sector.
