History University of Kansas

In the snowy month of February, 1863, beneath the guiding hands of Governor Thomas Carney, the genesis of the Kansas State University in the town of Lawrence was written into law. The townsfolk chipped in to meet the daunting requirement of a $15,000 endowment fund alongside the mighty task of providing a site not less than forty acres for the university.

Lo and behold! A majestic hill known as Hogback Ridge, later called Mount Oread, was chosen as the perfect backdrop for the nurturing University. Generously donated by Charles L. Robinson, a former Governor of Kansas and an original settler of Lawrence, and his wife Sara, it not only met the criteria but exceeded it. An exchange of land was conducted, gifting the 40-acre site to the great State of Kansas.

The generous philanthropist Amos Adams Lawrence bestowed a stunning $10,000 to the mandated endowment fund. Imagine the immense joy when the remaining sum was raised by the local denizens of Lawrence through private donations! Embroidered with their love and commitment, it's no wonder the University enjoys such camaraderie even today.

The good news arrived on November 2, 1863, as Governor Carney announced that all requirements had been met. Lawrence, the little town, had seized this golden opportunity, making room in its heart for the blooming university. The official genesis of the University followed the next year.

The first kernels of higher education were sown in March 1865, when the school's Board of Regents convened, laying the structure for the coming years. Hard work began to craft the first college building. A few short, strenuous months later, on September 12, 1866, elated students shuffled into the corridors, ready to imbibe wisdom.

The University's head held high when, in 1873, the first degree was awarded. A Doctor of Divinity was conferred upon the commendable preacher Richard Cordley, a robust voice of the prevailing abolitionist movement.

Showcasing its adaptability, the University weathered World War II by being part of an exclusive group of 131 institutions that featured the V-12 Navy College Training Program. This remarkable initiative offered students a direct route to becoming a Navy commission.

Today, the Kansas University is a cradle of knowledge, fostering robust political discourse in the hallowed halls of the Robert J. Dole Institute of Politics, while also brimming with cultural riches at the Spencer Museum of Art. Noteworthy contributions are made in research and conservation by the KU Natural History Museum, alongside the enlightening influence of the Beach Center on Disability.

A host of radio stations add melody to the airwaves and local museums offer a trip down memory lane. Amidst all this, the legendary Allen Fieldhouse rests as the crown jewel, pointed out with a certain gleam of pride in every student's eye.

Thus goes the proud, humbling journey of the University of Kansas. A beacon for international students, promising an enriching experience, where you can etch your own place in history.
