In the wake of Oklahoma’s statehood in 1907, there was a growing anticipation in the air for the establishment of a higher educational institution. As early as 1908, legislative decision makers laid the groundwork for six agricultural high schools in each judicial district, with Lawton being handpicked the following year for this noble endeavour. Through concerted community efforts, a significant 220 acres of land was secured for this cause, just three kilometres away from the heart of the town.
Originally, private Baptist college was envisioned for this serene plot of land. However, fate had different designs when their plan fell through, paving the way for the birth of what was to become the Cameron State School of Agriculture. The institution was christened in honour of Rev. Evan Dhu Cameron, a Baptist minister with the distinction of being Oklahoma's first State Superintendent of Schools.
On November 16th, 1909, the school welcomed its first students. The fledgling institution was hosted in the humble backdrop of a bank's basement, whilst an impressive campus was under construction. The initial years were challenging, but the spark ignited by their inaugural academic year kept the flame alive.
Fast forward to 1927 and you can note the evolution of the institution as junior college-level classes were introduced. This was in response to a growing local thirst for advanced education that eclipsed what was available in southwest Oklahoma. Subsequently, the institution was rechristened as Cameron State Agricultural College.
They waved goodbye to high school preparatory classes by 1941. A shift in focus saw Cameron becoming solely a junior college, integrating into the Oklahoma State System of Higher Education. The same year, it joined the esteemed ranks of institutions governed by the Board of Regents of Oklahoma A&M Colleges.
