Founded by trailblazing Methodists, Illinois proudly houses its oldest university, McKendree. Maintaining its solid relationship with the United Methodist Church, McKendree's history draws an interesting path. The university sprouted its roots in 1828, beautifully nestled in two leased shacks. Lebanon Seminary, as it was initially known, managed to gather a crowd of 72 eager students under the watchful eye of Edward Raymond Ames.
Not long after its establishment, in 1830, a significant change was set into motion. Bishop William McKendree – a figure of note as the first American-born bishop of the Methodist church – gave his blessings to the board of trustees to rename the institution. Thus, McKendree College was born. As a testament to his commitment towards the institute, Bishop McKendree later transferred ownership of a whopping 480 acres of Shiloh's land towards the college's endowment.
Our journey brings us to 1833, when Reverend Peter Akers ascended the stairs of McKendree College as its first president. Notably, Rev. Akers not only served as the president three solid times but also leaped as the first receiver of a doctorate – Honorary Doctorate of Divinity.
Fast forward to 1835 – a milestone year for the college. McKendree College turned the page to a new chapter of its history with the reception of one of the initial charters granted to independent church colleges by the Illinois legislature. The university continues to function under the privilege of this charter, and a more liberal one secured in 1839. This second charter brought liberal policies like freedom of choice in course selection, making the university a pioneer in education methodology.
Dusting some old records from 1994, we see an interesting transition. James M. Dennis, the then-president, helped skyrocket the student enrollment rates. The following seven years witnessed extensive progress as the college took the plunge into an aggressive capital campaign launching in 2001.
Such a campaign marked a transformative phase for McKendree College. It successfully amassed north of $20 million in funds. This monetary inflow facilitated the college's dream of creating a performing arts center. The Russel E. and Fern M. Hettenhausen Center for the Arts – lovingly referred to as The Hett – rose like a phoenix from the ashes of this campaign portraying the university's commitment to arts and culture.
