Back in 1846, a progressive group of Baptists embarked on an ambitious journey - they dreamed of creating a central academic institution in Pennsylvania which laser-focused on enlightening young minds. These pioneers from the White Deer Valley Baptist Church named their creation "the University at Lewisburg". Can you imagine? A high school for boys, another for girls, a college and even a Theological Institution, all brought to life with their relentless vision and efforts.
At the foresight helm was Stephen William Taylor, a reputed professor from Madison University. He was the one to draft a charter and spearhead the developmental activities of this new venture. However, here comes an interesting twist. For the university to be granted full corporate status, the charter stipulated a condition that required raising a whopping $100,000 - a massive sum at that time. And, guess what? The task was accomplished with contributions from more than 4,000 subscribers! Want to hear a heartwarming tale? Even a small boy pitched in with 12 cents, reflecting the passion that fueled the institution.
We step into time machine and it's now 1846. The university flickers to life in the basement of the First Baptist Church in Lewisburg, initially operating as the Lewisburg High School. A shift occurred in 1848 when the school transformed into the Academic and Primary Department of the University at Lewisburg. Fast forward to 1850, and we see the Department settling into its first dedicated building on campus - the known-today Taylor Hall, an all-in-one center, nurturing both male and female studies.
The University held its first graduation ceremony on August 20, 1851. Among the seven men graduating was James Buchanan, who would later shine on the grand stage as the 15th President of the United States. Over the next few years, the University witnessed several changes, including the introduction of college courses for women in 1883, unthinkable for most institutions at the time.
Financial crises have changed many a path in history, and the University at Lewisburg had its own brush with economic downturn in 1881. Now imagine a sunshine-filled moment after a storm - that's what William Bucknell’s generous donation of $50,000 brought to the institution - a lifeline that saved the sinking ship. In honor of this act, the trustees decided in 1886 to rename the University as Bucknell University.
From 1890 to 1930, Bucknell thrived with an increasing number of faculty and students. Even during the tough times of the Depression in 1933, the institution showed resilience and came up with creative ideas like founding a new institution, Bucknell Junior College. Fast forward, that institution is today's independent Wilkes University.
