Imagine 1893, when the state's chief official, William J. McConnell, penned his approval on an act on the 27th of January. This act would bring the Lewiston State Normal School to life in Lewiston. The city's mayor and council, however, had to act swiftly and part with ten acres of the city park land by May 1, 1893 to make this dream real.
A team of devoted individuals became the first Trustees of this promising institution. Among them were James W. Reid, Norman B. Willey, Benjamin Wilson, J. Morris Howe, and C. W. Schaff, with Reid being elected as the Board's President, a role he served until 1902.
Even as the legislature lagged in providing funds for construction, the townsfolk gathered the required land swiftly. The first President of the School, George E. Knepper, showed his dedication by starting classes in a downtown Lewiston lease space on the 6th of January, 1896 while construction was still ongoing. The school was resurrected in 1955 with a promising affiliation with the University of Idaho, but the partnership fell through in 1963 over accreditation concerns.
Despite these hiccups, the institution regained its four-year status in 1963, secured funding by 1965 and saw its student numbers grow. From just 465 students in 1964, enrollment soared to 1,033 by the fall of 1968.
