With a name that means 'across the woods' in Latin, Transylvania University is no stranger to navigating the wilderness of academia; after all, it was the first college to establish itself west of the Allegheny Mountains. When did all this begin, you may ask? It was the winter of 1780, even before Kentucky had earned its statehood, when the Virginia Assembly chartered Transylvania Seminary. And, who was the driving force behind this remarkable step? It was thePresbyterians.
Originally, the university called a humble log cabin in Boyle County, Kentucky, home. Imagine, just nine years later in 1789 they moved to Lexington, where the first campus was a single building nestling in what we today know as the historic Gratz Park. By 1818, they had constructed a new main building for classes, an iconic symbol of academic excellence. But fate had other plans; a destructive fire razed the building to the ground in 1829. This led to the university finding its new home north of Third Street.
Some of the significant moments of Transylvania's eventful history took place here. The towering edifice of Old Morrison was erected between 1830–34 under the watchful eye of illustrious educator and law practitioner, Henry Clay, who also took up the dual roles of a teacher and board member at Transylvania. The university expanded to include a medical school, law school, divinity school, and a college of arts and sciences, making it a comprehensive academic institution.
Meanwhile, the Disciples of Christ Church founded Bacon College in Georgetown, which was renamed as Kentucky University in 1858. It merged with Transylvania University in 1865, thereby amalgamating their academic legacies. Despite the turbulent times and multiple name changes, Transylvania University remained resolute academically. It drew attention from the South's political leaders, military families, and business moguls, helping countless ambitious young men achieve their academic dreams, much like Stephen F. Austin, the founder of Texas.
The university broadened its horizons under the banner of the Agricultural and Mechanical College (A&M) of Kentucky, which came into being as a part of Kentucky University following the Morrill Act. But religious control over a federally funded land-grant college raised eyebrows and as a result, the A&M was transitioned into an independent state-run institution in 1878 and it eventually grew into one of the state's premier public universities: the University of Kentucky.
In this swirling tide of constant evolution and restructuring, Kentucky University's College of the Bible traced its lineage back to Bacon College's Department of Hebrew Literature. Subsequent years saw further changes and divisions, including the Lexington Theological Seminary.
Notably in 1903, a significant development took place when Hamilton College, a women's college founded in 1869 in Lexington, merged into Kentucky University. But the confusion simmering between Kentucky University and its offshoot, the University of Kentucky, eventually led to the complete revamp of its name to what we know and love today - Transylvania University, in 1908.
The intrigue around Transylvania University' s historic legacy is such that in 1988, Hallmark Cards inadvertently infringed on its trademark, producing "Transylvania University" T-shirts for the Halloween season, falsely assuming it was the fictional alma mater of Count Dracula. Upon discovery, Hallmark immediately recalled all unsold products, apologetic over the mix-up.
