History Utah State University

On a breezy winter day, December 16, 1861, an idea for a unique institution was born. A visionary named Justin Morrill introduced a bill into the U.S House of Representatives. This bill aimed to create at least one college in every American state. The college would be accessible to everyone but was especially dedicated to the sons of workers. This idea came to life when President Abraham Lincoln approved the Morrill Land-Grant Colleges Act in July of the next year.

Meanwhile, across the Atlantic, Anthon H. Lund, a member of the Utah Territorial Legislature, was on a similar intellectual quest. He recognized a dire need for a hybrid institution, one that wedded the best of scientific research and academic learning with agriculture, after visiting some rural agricultural schools in Denmark. After hearing about the Morrill Land-Grant Act upon his return to the United States, he envisaged this futuristic university receiving a great deal of support from the members of the Territorial Legislature.

One pertinent question arose, where would this university be located? Giving this puzzle some thorough thought, Logan, a city in Cache County, became the chosen location. On March 8, 1888, a bill was passed to establish the Agricultural College of Utah, and on September 2, 1890, 14-year-old Miss Vendla Berntson enrolled as the first student.

The college, however, was no stranger to controversy. Some opposed the expansion of the college beyond its agricultural roots, fearing it might expense the growth of the University of Utah. Two major attempts to merge it with the University of Utah were successfully dodged. But, by 1907, a strict restriction was agreed upon, confining the courses to agriculture, domestic science, and mechanic arts. This left the University of Utah with the sole responsibility for courses in engineering, law, medicine, fine arts, and pedagogy.

Despite these restrictions, the college made gradual progress, with its statewide Extension program added in 1914. In 1928, the School of Education was added, and in 1929, the title of the institution changed to Utah State Agricultural College. Another milestone was reached in 1950 when it conferred its first doctoral degrees.

Getting onto the world stage, the United States Navy selected Utah State as one of six colleges to introduce a Primary School in the highly unique Electronics Training Program (ETP). By 1942, several Navy students were found strolling around the campus. The ETP Primary School continued at Utah State till August 1944, graduating a plentiful 30 classes.

A contentious time in Utah State's history was the late 1970s, with the deteriorating U.S. relations with Iran. The period witnessed a decline in the Middle Eastern student population which began to witness a rise only recently.

The end of the 20th Century marked a new phase for Utah State. It aimed to shed its reputation as a small regional college and morphed into a nationally prominent university. Under George Emert's presidency, the university’s endowment increased from $7 million to $80 million.

Furthermore, the Utah State also saw expansion under former president Stan Albrecht. As of 2019, the university's endowment is an impressive $402.9 million, and it continues to grow in terms of enrollment, research, and endowment. Today, the university proudly stands as a result of the efforts of many visionary figures and the perseverance of the Utah community.
