Envision the year 1905. Within the quiet town of Loma Linda, a significant event was unfolding. Two visionaries named John Burden and Ellen G. White, both devout Seventh-day Adventists, initiated plans for establishing what was initially known as the Loma Linda Sanitarium.
Just one year later in 1906, this place became a place of meeting. A council of church workers, a mix of faculty from Fernando Academy and Loma Linda school, coupled with the executive committee of the Southern California Conference, convened here. In that very year, they established the Loma Linda College of Evangelists - a bastion of education, it was.
Years passed quickly, and with time, the school earned a reputation. By 1910, it officially became known as 'Loma Linda College.' It wasn't until 1909 that the school received a charter as a Medical College and then became 'College of Medical Evangelists of Loma Linda'.
Between 1913 and 1962, the University was predominantly conducting basic science education at Loma Linda. For the clinical experience, however, students were sent off to Los Angeles. This was the need of the hour as the Loma Linda Sanitarium didn't have a clinic, and the American Medical Association needed the medical college to provide sufficient clinical experience to its students.
It was within this backdrop that the leaders interested in developing the medical school engaged with the national Council on Medical Education, formed by the American Medical Association in 1905. Dr. Nathan Porter Colwell took on a pivotal role as the council's first secretary in 1906. Following intense discussions and with Dr. Colwell's guidance, in 1913, they opened the First Street Dispensary in Los Angeles - a milestone indeed!
In the early days, the College of Medical Evangelists faced the challenge of a 'C' rating by the United States federal government. Thus, it began a journey towards improving this rating. This was essential as the government exempted medical students from the military draft only if they were from 'A' and 'B' rated medical schools. With untiring efforts, Percy T. Magan and his colleagues convinced Dr. Colwell to reassess their rating. Following his visit and thorough evaluation, the rating was upgraded to 'B'. This marked a remarkable episode for Loma Linda.
On November 16, 1922, the College of Medical Evangelists earned an 'A' rating, a historical achievement not only for the college but also for the medical fraternity at large.
In 1961, the institution transformed into a university and took on the name of its city - Loma Linda. By the following year, all science and clinical faculties became part of this consolidated university setup.
Fast forward to July 9, 1967, and Loma Linda University opened the Medical Center. The first day saw more than 125 patients from the old community hospital. From there, the university continued to grow, operating from 1967 to 1990 a Seventh-day Adventist liberal arts college in Riverside, now known as La Sierra University.
The year 1980 saw LLU standing tall as the only Level I trauma center in San Bernardino, Riverside, Inyo and Mono counties, covering more than a fourth of the state's land mass. Today, it boasts of about 1,600 emergency helicopters landing there each year.
Changes in leadership brought a new dimension to LLU in 1991 when B. Lyn Behrens became the institution's first female president. After her successful run till March 2008, succession took place by Richard Hart, a former chancellor of LLU.
On October 28, 2009, the university welcomed its new Centennial Complex, significantly enhance its infrastructure. With an area of 150,000-square-foot, the complex featured classrooms, auditoriums, workstations, and simulation labs, where students could hone their medical skills on live actors and advanced robotic manikins.
From its humble beginnings to today, Loma Linda University has grown and developed, carrying forth the vision of its founders. Today, it stands as a beacon of excellence in education, serving not just its community but also the global fraternity of learners.
