R. G. LeTourneau's groundbreaking idea came to life in 1946, giving birth to what is now known as the LeTourneau Technical Institute. It was his dream to nurture Christian leaders who would shine in every workplace. You wouldn't believe it now, but then, the university had found its home in an abandoned World War II hospital which was once a healing place for servicemen with neurological and dermatological issues.
A dollar was all it took to purchase the 156 acres from the United States government with the help of Longview News-Journal publisher, Carl Estes, and other community leaders. However, there were strings attached; within a decade, the U.S. government could reclaim the land and its 220 buildings during an emergency and any new construction or demolition was absolutely out of question.
Now imagine this, on February 20, 1946, classes commenced at LeTourneau and the enrolled students were exclusively male, mostly veterans. Their academic structure was unique. Whilst half the students attended classes, the other half worked at R. G. LeTourneau's LeTourneau Incorporated manufacturing plant thus fulfilling the laboratory requirements of all industrial courses; talk about a hands-on approach!
Did you know that the LeTourneau Technical Institute and LeTourneau, Inc. were one company until 1961? From just a technical institution, the year witnessed the transformation of the school into a co-educational LeTourneau College, now offering bachelor's degree programs. This was also the beginning of a shift from the traditional wooden infrastructure of the school.
The subsequent years saw several significant changes under the leadership of Allen C. Tyler, Richard H. LeTourneau, and Harry T. Hardwick, including the erection of the Tyler Hall Dormitory for men in 1962, and the Margaret Estes Library in 1963. But most notable is Hardwick's role in obtaining accreditation for LeTourneau from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, adding another laurel to the University's cap.
A major transition in LeTourneau's journey occurred in 1989, when the college transformed into LeTourneau University under the leadership of President Alvin O. Austin who held office till 2007. Did you know that Austin oversaw the elimination of all wooden barracks from the Longview campus with the exception of Speer Chapel, a historic landmark?
Several impressive infrastructural improvements under Austin's leadership include the construction of the university mall, Belcher Bell Tower, the Solheim Recreation and Activity Center, and seven new residence halls among others. A noteworthy addition was a 2,011-seat auditorium named the S.E. Belcher Jr. Chapel and Performance Center that was unveiled in spring 2007.
In an unexpected turn of events, Austin announced his retirement from the presidency of the university in the spring of 2006. Replacing him was Dale A. Lunsford, formerly the vice president of student affairs and external relations at the University of Texas at Tyler, who assumed office on July 1, 2007.
Finally, it's impossible to overlook the 2015 incident that brought LeTourneau University to the spotlight when Outsports reported an update to the student-athlete handbook banning gay athletes from dating and expressing support for gay marriage. It served as a befitting reminder that every institution has its share of controversies. Indeed, at the end of the day, it's about learning from the past and striving for a more inclusive future.
