Now, this gang of visionaries didn't just wake up one morning and start building schools. Nope! The story begins with a chap named Peter H. Burnett. This smarty pants was the first Governor of California and the mastermind behind the idea of public education in California.
What do you suppose was Burnett's first move? He gathered some of the brightest minds of the time, pooled in a handful of dough, and voila! - the Minns' Evening Normal School was born in San Francisco. Pretty crazy name, huh? That was in 1857, and here's an interesting tidbit - it was one of the first normal schools (teacher training colleges) in the entire U.S. of A.
As the years rolled by, the place got renamed and reshaped many times over. It went from being Minns' Evening Normal School to San Jose State Normal School in 1862, and then to San Jose State Teachers College by 1921.
