Riding on the wave of this compelling evolution, a spark ignited in the hearts of a power couple - Paul Kessler, a seasoned financier, and Diana Derycz-Kessler, a lawyer trained by none other than the prestigious Harvard. With their idea, a seed was sown, and alongside venture capitalist Bud MaLette and Thom Mount, The Los Angeles Film School (LAFS) was born.
The inception of LAFS was a result of a powerful brainstorming session in 1998, where our founders visualised an education hub that nurtures film student's creative dreams and ambitions. Their passionate vision was fueled by an investment of $2 million, paving the way for the first batch of classes to commence in September 1999.
As the curtains of the new millennium rose, the first cohort of the film school graduated in July 2000. Their educational journey was guided by exemplary faculty members, including renowned professor of film, Tom Schatz, maestros of cinematography, William A. Fraker and Janusz Kamiński, and illustrious directors – Jon Amiel and Donald Petrie.
In the initial phase of operation, Bristol Investments, owned by founders Kessler and Derycz-Kessler, was the main funding source. A year and a half into this educational venture, the dynamic husband-wife duo took complete ownership of the institute. Undeterred by the challenges of overspending, Derycz-Kessler stout-heartedly assumed the role of CEO. A wise and judicious leader, she guided the institute's financial growth, escalating the initial investment to a staggering $15 million by 2001.
This colossal investment wasn't just figureheads; it played a significant role in equipping the educational institution with top-notch film production equipment. LAFS, as of 2001, prided itself on aiding students in creating over 700 short films. The student strength was an impressive count of 150 full-time and roughly 30 part-time scholars.
2003 marked a strategic turning point for the school, as private equity investors were brought on board. Fast forward to April 2011, and there was a slight hiccup when ACCET withdrew its accreditation for The Los Angeles Recording School, triggering an appeal. The controversy settled amicably, following the successful transition of remaining students to LAFS, which continued to hold ACCSC accreditation.
That's not all, the decade brought more challenges for our institution. In February 2010, the school's employees attempted to unionize but faced resistance in the form of fired personnel and ensuing litigation. Fortunately, the turmoil settled by withdrawing the petition for unionization.
By 2011, LAFS had blossomed into an educational powerhouse with soaring student strength of 1,800. Adding another feather in its cap, Diana Derycz-Kessler gloriously completed her 17-year tenure as CEO in 2017, with Tammy Elliott stepping in as the current president of the school.
