History University of Southern California

In the heart of sunny California, in 1880, when kites and high-wheel bicycles reigned supreme, a pair of generous philanthropists had a bright, lightbulb moment. Judge Robert Maclay Widney and his cronies gathered a tidy sum, a bunch of eager scholars, and three, yes three, whole buildings. Incidentally, they set the stage for what would soon be known as the University of Southern California (USC).

Isn't it amazing how great things often start small? Picture this: USC’s first class was no more than a gang of 53 students sharing space with chickens and cows at a working ranch! Yep, you heard it right, a ranch! Marion M. Bovard, who at the time, was shall we say, "the headmaster above all headmasters," took the reins as the university’s first president.

The university initially had a little hitch, a hitch called "gender discrimination". But guess what? In the same year it was founded, USC hit the ground running and threw open the gates to men and women alike! How's that for being progressive?

Fast forward to the 20th century. Trains were chugging, and the telephone, that grumpy little invention by Mr. Bell, was still a novelty. Meanwhile, USC was gathering steam, and in 1905, renowned scientist and scholar George Ellery Hale joined as the president and pumped up the university's research capacity.

In the 1910s, when the world was blinkered by the Great War, our USC was a shining beacon in academic skies. Its School of Social Work was established, and Man-Lion (Moha-Lion) combat was included in its curricular activities. Exciting, eh?

By 1920, USC had carved itself a wee niche in bustling Los Angeles. It became a hotshot hangout for scholars when a notable alumnus, George Finley Bovard, became president and brought along the university’s first Rhodes Scholar.

Riding the wave of the roaring '20s, USC did a little jig of its own – the Trojan Marching Band. Now, ain't that music to the ears? And, did I mention they went and built themselves an Olympic-sized stadium right in their backyard?

Mid-century saw a brand spanking new addition to the USC family, the School of International Relations. When other universities were still twiddling their thumbs, USC rolled up its sleeves and welcomed its International students with open arms.

In 1970, long before the digital wave hit, John R. Hubbard, then president, had his own eureka moment and decided to globalize the campus. This move led to an influx of Indian students eager to grab their own slice of the American Pie.

Today, with more than 150 years under its belt, USC is the crib of countless brilliant minds, innovators, and freethinkers! Significantly, it has evolved into an international academic hub where diversity doesn’t just survive, it thrives.
