Did you know that the story we're about to delve into all began when Archbishop John A. Floersh sparked off a crucial announcement in November 1949? The wheels were set in motion for the establishment of a unique institution now known as Bellarmine University. With two devoted associate editors of the Louisville Archdiocesan newspaper, Alfred Horrigan and Raymond J. Treece, as his trusted allies, he envisaged the future of education.
Just imagine, it was 1950 when The Catholic Archdiocese of Louisville catalysed the first steps, launching Bellarmine College with only 115 eager freshmen, one modest building, Pasteur Hall which was still patiently awaiting its front door! But from such humble beginnings, the college welcomed all students with open arms, irrespective of their faith and race. By its first graduation ceremony in 1954, 42 proud students walked across the stage, undeterred by the looming shadow of the Korean War.
During the 1960s, Bellarmine's tapestry began weaving itself in colourful and unexpected directions. Mercer arrived bringing along students from 17 different states and a couple of foreign countries - a true sign of growing global influence! But, what made this phase even more exhilarating is that it gave birth to the first Bellarmine computer! Yes, you heard it right, the advent of digital technology first dawned on Bellarmine's campus during this period.
As the college saw a change in leadership, in sails Mr. Thomas Merton in 1967, arguably etching the most defining stroke in Bellarmine's identity as he stationed all his manuscripts at the college — all while the institution welcomed Ursuline College under their umbrella in the following year. At the arrival of their second president in 1972, following Horrigan's resignation, Bellarmine seemed set on a course to extinguish, with dwindling enrolments and looming bankruptcy.
Petrik, however, came along just in time in 1973. An executive from California, Petrik bravely took the helm and steered the Bellarmine ship into calmer waters. You wouldn't believe it, but under Petrik's dynamic leadership, the enrolment figures sailed back above 2,000 and the college introduced its first graduate program – an MBA degree in 1975. Within no time, the school had also launched women's basketball, men's soccer, and women's volleyball!
The 1980s, gave Bellarmine a firm push towards modernity and expansion. Not only did the enrolment figures tick upwards, but the architectural landscape began changing rapidly. A variety of new constructions sprouted, enriching the scenery - from the Brown Activities Center to Wyatt Center for the Arts, and even a Humanities Building dedicated to the alumni!
Would you believe this beautiful university, bursting with life and culture, was once just a mere idea? By the end of the 1990s, under the leadership of Joseph J. McGowan, the university incepted its first Strategic Plan and observed its shift from being a mere commuter school to a residential college.
The new millennium gifted Bellarmine with a new identity. Celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2000, Bellarmine College transformed into Bellarmine University, reflecting its evolved stature. This milestone acted as a launchpad for Vision 2020 which aimed at tripling enrolment, doubling the number of buildings, and intricacies such as contemplating moving athletic programs to NCAA Division I. By 2009, Bellarmine was thriving with a student population of 2,881 students, with over 700 residing on the campus.
Taking a moment to recall McGowan, who passed away in 2016, leaving the university under the capable leadership of interim president Doris Tegart. She shepherded the university until 2017, when then Loyola University veteran, Susan M. Donovan assumed the presidency. As we look back, we can celebrate the visionary foundation laid by Archbishop Floersh, Horrigan and Treece back in the 1950s, and look forward to an exciting and bright future for Bellarmine University.
