History Texas Tech University

Venture back to the 1880s, a time of increased settlement in West Texas; we find the inception of a dream. This dream, to open a college in the slowly populating region, was first brought to life in 1917, thanks to a bill passed by the Texas legislature. The legislators, in their foresight, planned to establish a branch of Texas A&M in Abilene. However, due to a scandal surrounding Governor James E. Ferguson, the dream faced a setback as the bill was repealed in 1919.

Now, take a jump forward to 1921. A new bill supporting the establishment of the college re-emerges at the state house and senate, but, Governor Pat Neff, shields the financial interests of West Texas and vetoes it. The veto sparked such ardent rebuke, that some West Texas residents even contemplated secession. A drastic but indicative measure of the people's determination to provide a higher education institution for the region.

Our journey takes us now to the year 1923. A historic decision to establish a brand new university rather than a branch campus was drafted under legislation. This groundbreaking proposal was the brainchild of State Senator William H. Bledsoe of Lubbock and State Representative Roy Alvin Baldwin of Slaton. It was on February 10, 1923, that Governor Neff, the previous antagonist to the plan, signed the legislation into effect, marking the birth of Texas Technological College.

Just a few months later, in July 1923, a committee began the challenging task of finding a suitable location for the new institution. When the committee arrived in Lubbock, they were shocked to find rows upon rows of residents, showing wholehearted and overwhelming support to host the institution. Outdoing other contenders like Floydada, Plainview, Big Spring, and Sweetwater, Lubbock was finally selected in August as the site for the new university.

With a site locked in, construction began on November 1, 1924. The administrative building's cornerstone was laid just ten days later in front of an audience of 20,000 people, marking an important milestone. The speakers at this momentous event included Governor Pat Neff, Amon G. Carter, Reverend E.E. Robinson, Colonel Ernest O. Thompson, and Representative Richard M. Chitwood. Chitwood, who later became the university's first business manager, served only for fifteen months before he tragically passed away in November 1926.

Fast forward to October 1, 1925, the college, buzzing with an initial enrollment of 914 students, both men and women, opened its doors for teaching. Comprising of schools of Agriculture, Engineering, Home Economics, and Liberal Arts, the institution set a firm foundation for academic excellence. It wasn’t much later, in 1925, that the college introduced military training with formal Reserve Officers' Training Corps training introduced in 1936.

As time passed, the college’s enrollments swelled to 3,890 by 1939. Despite a downturn during World War II, Texas Tech played a noble role in training over 4,747 men in its armed forces training detachments. Following the war, in 1946, the college's enrollment quickly rebounded to 5,366 from just 1,696 three years earlier.

In the 1960s, the institution moved beyond its technical focus, encompassing a broader academic offering. While popular amongst students, the move led to a rather heated debate about the name "Texas Technological College". The Faculty Advisory Committee suggested changing the name to "Texas State University" to better represent its broadened scope, only to face opposition from the Board of Directors and many alumni keen on preserving the Double T. Many suggestions surfaced, but eventually, the Board chose "Texas Tech University", a name that stuck after the state legislature's approval in 1964, changing officially in 1969.

Texas Tech University accomplished a notable milestone in 1961 by becoming an integrated institution when it admitted three African-American students. This progressive step led to the university offering its first athletic scholarship to a black student, Danny Hardaway, in 1967.

In the modern history of the institution from the 1960s through the 1970s, the university invested an astounding US$150 million in constructing and expanding buildings for various disciplines. This continued growth emphasized the university's commitment to staying on the cutting edge of education.

In 1996, the Texas Tech University System was established due to the institution's ongoing expansion. This new entity, led by former State Senator John T. Montford, increased the academic enterprise's broad reach even further, pushing Texas Tech into the 21st century. Challenges persisted but didn’t hinder the university's growth, and by 2011, over 42,000 students were enrolled across the
