They stumble upon Dr. Josephus Hopwood, a man at the helm of Milligan College in Tennessee, back in 1903. They convince him to establish what would become a prominent institution of learning – the University of Lynchburg. Yes, that's how the university was born, from a formerly failed resort called the Westover Hotel, bought for $13,500. With his wife, Sarah Eleanor LaRue Hopwood by his side, Dr. Hopwood led the institution, attached to the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).
Their collaborative vision? To set up a place where individuals of all identities could seek knowledge. An independent, coeducational, residential, and selective institution, it was then the Virginia Christian College. Some years later, in 1919, this bastion of knowledge turned a new page and took on a new name, Lynchburg College. Why the change, you ask? The audience had expanded beyond the territories of Virginia, a fascinating chapter in the making of this hallowed institution.
Fast forward to an era when the USA was focusing on nuclear technology. Lynchburg College etched its name in history as the first institution to train nuclear physicists and engineers in the U.S. for the NS Savannah project.
