History Randolph College

Back in the day, a compassionate individual named William Waugh Smith had a vision to create an educational institution that would pave the way forward for women's education. Despite facing opposition from his own institution, Randolph-Macon College, Smith kept his spirit alive. He was the College's president, well-connected and well-regarded, yet he couldn't convince his peers to adopt co-education.

The story took a turn when the city of Lynchburg magnanimously donated a whopping 50 acres for the establishment of a women's college. Smith had found his canvas, and from here, the seeds of Randolph-Macon Woman's College were sown. The institution was tied closely with the United Methodist Church, a sign of its deep-seated values.

Historically, 1916 marks a significant year for this pioneering institution. Yes, you heard it right, 1916 marked a milestone when the college proudly became the first women's college in South to earn a Phi Beta Kappa charter. From this point onward, things started heating up - in 1953, the two colleges, Randolph-Macon College and Randolph-Macon Woman's College started administering with separate boards.

Fast forward to 1979, and the stirrings of recognition were beginning to take place. Main Hall, the stalwart structure built in 1891, was honored with a coveted position on the National Register of Historic Places.

A twist in the tale occurred in 2006, when new winds of change blew over the old walls of the college. The institution announced its intent to facilitate coeducation. Now, this raised many eyebrows. You see, not everyone took kindly to this sudden announcement. From protests to public outcry, the road to coeducation was rocky. There were lawsuits, and combating accusations of recruiting under false pretenses, it was a challenging time for Randolph.

The school was officially renamed Randolph College on July 1, 2007, stepping into a brave new world of coeducation. As expected, this transition was anything but smooth - vandalism, polarization, and public discontent, it was all there.

Alas, things settled down eventually. With the graduation of the last batch of students on May 16, 2010, who had the option to claim Randolph-Macon Woman's College diplomas, an era ended.

Now, if you're musing about why 'Randolph' as the college's name, let's clear your mind. It's named after an intriguing character from Virginia history, John Randolph of Roanoke. This troubled gentleman, known for his erratic behavior and a duel with Henry Clay, left a legacy. After his demise in 1833, he did a commendable act of releasing hundreds of slaves from bondage. A complex character who experienced the intensity of life, not unlike the college that carries his name.
