Imagine the year 1899, the brink of a new century, when the seeds of Western Illinois University, a beacon of knowledge, were sowed on the land donated graciously by the Freemasons of the Illinois Lodge #17. It was April 24th when something revelatory happened; Macomb, after winning a neck-to-neck competition with Quincy, Aledo, Monmouth, La Harpe, and Rushville, was chosen as the nurturing ground for a blossoming "western" university.
The ground-breaking discovery of Macomb's successful bid was unveiled when the century-old cornerstone of Sherman Hall, the renowned administration building, was opened during the university's centennial celebrations. You would say it's fate, destiny, or the sheer determination of the Freemasons that paved the way for this learning institution.
Fast forward to September 23, 1902, a remarkable date etched in the university's history. It’s the date when 229 bright, ambitious students embarked on their educational journey on the promising campus of Western Illinois. Every year henceforth, this day is cherished as Founders’ Day, a bustling festivity painting the university in vibrant shades of nostalgia.
Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, the institution went through metamorphosis not once, not twice, but thrice since its inception. First known as the Western Illinois State Normal School, it took on the mantle of Western Illinois State Teachers College in 1921. This was soon followed by another leap, transforming into Western Illinois State College in 1947. Finally, in 1957, it adapted its present title - Western Illinois University.
It's fascinating how Sherman Hall, the main facility initially, became a building of significance in its evolution. As the university expanded its horizons and proliferated its programs, the requirements exceeded the boundaries of Sherman Hall. However, this monumental building stands tall today, graced with the honor of being listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
One can envision the Macomb campus now as a thriving education hub, boasting 53 state-of-the-art buildings adorning over 1,050 acres (about 424.9 hectares) of land. Isn't it astounding to note the power-pack growth of this institution since its humble beginnings?!
Now, if we transport ourselves to the fall of 1960, a significant shift in the university's presence comes to light. For the first time, the institute marked its footprint in the Quad Cities, offering its pioneering undergraduate course. From that moment, it maintained a strong presence in Quad Cities, spanning over 4 decades.
Even after over a 100-year journey, the university didn't escape the impact of fluctuating economic trends. It faced significant downsizing; a considerable number of faculty and staff opted to leave in 2016 and 2017 as the consequence of state budget cuts, combined with declining undergraduate enrollment. This exodus, like an inevitable ebb and flow, was perhaps a stern reflection of the worldly challenges.
But remember, each trial and tribulation, every shift and transformation, and all the historic landmarks significantly contribute to the effervescent narrative of Western Illinois University. To be a part of such a legacy - isn't it pride itself?
