History Drew University

Picture this, the year is 1866, and Daniel Drew, a benefactor with a vision, steps forward. He reaches out to church leaders at the Methodist Centenary with a proposition to craft a theological seminary near the buzzing hub of New York City. Drew's condition? It must be led by his pastor, John McClintock.

Fast forward to 1867 and Drew University begins its legacy, with McClintock steering the ship, both at the helm as president and at the heart as a professor of practical theology. Being the third-oldest out of thirteen Methodist seminaries linked with the United Methodist Church, the institution was highly respected.

From its inception, Drew University sought to provide an engrossing blend of ministerial training and broad cultural exposure through humanities studies. Sowing seeds of influence in Methodist theology and biblical scholarship, prominent faculty members, including James Strong, had a significant impact. Notable for his work on the ten-volume Cyclopaedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical literature, Strong also authored Strong's Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible during his tenure at the seminary.

Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, the Drew Theological Seminary committed itself to nurturing hundreds of Methodist ministers. It also broadened its horizons by initiating a course of study for women in 1920 when it introduced the "College of Missions." This was later rechristened as the "College of Religious Education and Missions" in 1929.

Fast forward again to 1928. A tale of opportunity and goodwill unfolded when Arthur J. Baldwin and Leonard D. Baldwin, successful attorneys and alumni from Cornell University, presented a gift of $1.5 million. Their endowment was soon used to establish an undergraduate liberal arts college. To appreciate their humility and sibling bond, the institution was named "Brothers College," and the seminary updated to "Drew University" to mark its significant expansion.

In 1942, amidst the throes of World War II, the university recognized the imminent shift in the demographic as many students went off to war. This led to the incorporation of the women's program into Brothers College, transforming it into a coeducational institution. Simultaneously, Drew also offered admissions to US Navy personnel through the V-12 Navy College Training Program.

Moving on to 1955, under university’s seventh president Fred Holloway’s leadership, Drew University expanded its reach by establishing graduate programs, primarily focusing on religious studies. This marked a pivotal shift, as Drew now began to offer a wider range of subjects in the field of humanities.

Time to get down the memory lane again - it's the 1970s, and with support from the Mellon Foundation, Drew University introduced a first-year seminar program. This focused on encouraging interdisciplinary study, paving the way for new majors in neuroscience and minors in unique fields.

Into the 21st century, Drew continues to expand and innovate. From becoming SAT-optional to welcoming Nobel laureates, from tuition cuts for accessibility to welcoming new leaders, Drew's evolution is captivating. In 2023, they ushered in a new phase with the arrival of their 15th president, Hilary L. Link, previously the president at Allegheny College.

This narrative spans over 150 years, encapsulating centuries of dedication, innovation, and evolution at Drew University. True to its Methodist heritage, the university has consistently strived to promote a holistic educational experience, integrating dynamic academics, spiritual exploration, and a commitment to the greater public good. This resilient spirit is evident in its history and journeys with each student in their pursuit of knowledge and self-discovery.

Remember, history is not merely a series of dates and events but a narrative, a story waiting to be discovered. After all, isn't that what education and exploration are all about? And what's more enticing than a university which is always ready to write new chapters in the book of evolution in education, with you as the central character? The story of Drew University is far from over. It continues with you.
