Can you imagine a university, which started from humble beginnings as a district agricultural high school back in 1909 in southwest Arkansas, evolving into a prestigious degree-granting institution? Southern Arkansas University, with its roots firmly laid down by the Arkansas Legislature, was initially titled the Third District Agricultural School. This institution, warmly nicknamed "TDAS" by its students and faculty, welcomed its first batch of enthusiastic learners in January 1911.
During its initial years, TDAS focused purely on subjects at the secondary school level. However, as we all know, change is the only constant. In 1925, the State Legislature provided its consent for the school to introduce two years' worth of college education and its maiden identity transition. The institution, now recognized as Agricultural and Mechanical College, Third District or Magnolia A&M, continued to offer its students high school and junior college courses until 1937.
Year 1949 marked an era of substantial transformation for the institution. Its Board of Trustees made a strategic call. The time was ripe to metamorphosis the college into a fully-fledged, four-year, degree-awarding institution. With this inspiring vision, the institution entered a brand-new phase of growth and fortification. Third-year college courses were introduced with the fall semester of 1950 and excitingly, fourth-year courses were added in the fall semester of 1951.
January 1951 brought with it yet another evolution. By Act Eleven, the institution donned a fresh title - Southern State College. However, this period also coincided with a less flattering aspect as non-white students were not allowed into Arkansas’ other six state-supported colleges, including Southern State College, until after 1954's Brown v. Board of Education.
It was a slow and gradual process. However, finally, in 1955, the doors of Southern State College started to open up for the African American students. In those days, they could enroll only in limited numbers for Saturday or night classes. In this regard, Wilmar B. Moss deserves a special mention. He paved the way for African American students at the institution, despite an initial rejection.
Fast forward to 1964, Congressional approval of the Civil Rights Act significantly impacted Southern State College. Its board of trustees finally agreed that excluding qualified African Americans was no longer beneficial. As a result, approximately ten Black undergraduates found their way to the college in fall. Only two years later, in 1966, black students were welcomed into school dormitories. Moreover, in 1974, the institution proudly appointed its first Black faculty member.
Another notable milestone was when the institution started offering a Master of Education Degree in certain areas in 1975. Coincidentally, Southern Arkansas University got its name that year, as approved by the Board of Higher Education on July 9, 1976, in line with Act 343 of the General Assembly of 1975.
Finally, the narrative wouldn't be complete without a small but significant development in 1975. The Southern Arkansas University family grew even more extensive when Southwest Technical Institute in Camden, Arkansas, joined hands with SAU, forming Southern Arkansas University Tech. It's been a fascinating journey, hasn't it?
