Credit goes to Denis Mary Bradley, the first Bishop of Manchester, who, yearning for an educational establishment in his diocese, extended an invitation to the Benedictine monks of Saint Mary’s Abbey, Newark, New Jersey.

However, the monks were compelled to reconstruct the college with $55,000 compensation from the Insurance Commissioner of the State of New Hampshire. The recovery was swift and remarkable. By 1893, the current center of campus was completed, although the fire had caused the delay of the first academic semester by a year. October 11, 1893, saw the official rededication of the college. Also constructed separately was a power house which currently serves as the college print shop.
