Picture this, back in 1932, a committed couple, Harry A.B. "H.A.B." Shapiro and Gertrude Gittle Crockett Shapiro, both of Russian descent, laid the foundation of what we now know as the Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU). Believe it or not, it all started with a modest accounting school that went by the name New Hampshire School of Accounting and Secretarial Science. Interesting, isn’t it?
Some years passed, specifically 20, H.A.B. Shapiro left for the heavenly abode with 25 passionate students on the roll. The reins of the school fell into the hands of his devoted wife, who ran the school until 1971, while holding the title of the president emerita until 1986.
Let's fast-forward to 1961. The school was incorporated and renamed to something quite formal – New Hampshire College of Accounting and Commerce. Believe it or not, in just two years, it received the official state charter in 1963, allowing it to award degrees to deserving students. The time span between 1963 and 1966 marked the first associate and bachelor's degrees ceremoniously conferred by the college.
Moving on to the noteworthy decade of the 70s, which was characterized by growth and widespread change. In 1971, the college relocated to its current lavish 300-acre campus near the Merrimack River. With the addition of programs like the Master of Business Administration introduced in 1974, and human services adopted from Franconia College in 1978, the offerings broadened significantly.
Come 1981, and the New Hampshire legislature gave the green light to the college to award Master of Science degrees in business-related subjects, inclusive of Master of Human Services degrees. In the same year, a closed-down Mount Saint Mary College transformed into the college's North Campus, marking the inception of the culinary arts program, which was set in motion in 1983.
Over the years, the North Campus enjoyed a considerable growth spurt triggering massive construction projects on the main campus during the mid-1990s, which included Washington Hall, Webster Hall, the Hospitality Center, and Belknap Hall. One must not forget that by 1995, the New Hampshire College began to offer innovative distance learning programs through the Internet.
The turn of the millennium brought with it a novel name – Southern New Hampshire University which was instituted on July 1, 2001. Around the same time, the construction of the New Castle Hall and Robert Frost Hall, housing, an art gallery was completed, closely followed by the integration of Notre Dame's graduate and undergraduate education programs, when their home college closed down.
The incumbent President, Paul LeBlanc, took the helm in 2003, which coincided with rising tuition fees and dwindling enrolment owing to an economic recession. However, in 2009, he shifted the focus to the College of Online and Continuing Education, which proved to be a game-changer. This move not only led to revenue growth but also injected life back into the main campus where enrolment had taken a hit.
As the years rolled by, SNHU took over the operation of Daniel Webster College’s engineering and aviation programs, following a bankruptcy filed by its parent company, ITT Technical Institute, in 2016–17. The university purchased the college's aviation facilities for a whopping $410,000, paving the way for a future in Aviation Operations and Management bachelor's degree for 30 promising students.
Fast forward to 2023, a financially challenging situation led to a staff cut of around 180 employees. However, the persistent President LeBlanc assured that SNHU was on the path to reducing student tuition to about $10,000 a year which is contingent upon addressing inefficiencies in labor, and programming, as he explicitly stated. Despite the hurdles faced, SNHU’s story is one of resilience, determination, and progression. And so, the journey continues...
