History University of New Hampshire

Let's flap those wings of memory and land back in time, in the year 1866. That's the time when the University of New Hampshire was born, but hey, they didn't name it so right from the baby steps. Back then, it was known as the New Hampshire College of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts. Quite a mouthful, isn't it? Well, the name might have changed but the spirit of the place has always been brimming with energy.

Our story of change kicks up a notch in 1893, when we moved from our original stomping grounds in Hanover to Durham. Thanks to a generous donation by Benjamin Thompson, a local farmer who never stepped foot inside a classroom but clearly had education imprinted on his heart, UNH found a new home.

Now, here's where things get exciting. Have you ever eavesdropped on your parents murmuring about the famous Morrill Act of 1862? It's the same act that was instrumental in setting up numerous colleges across the U.S., and yes, UNH is one of its products! Founded to primarily teach agriculture and mechanic arts, it stretched its wings into studies supporting liberal arts in 1923. Now that's the fancy term your parents use for studying humanities, science, and arts!

Talking about change, did you know UNH has had a fair share of leadership shuffles? Well, there have been about 19 Presidents spearheading this wonderful institution since inception till date. Talk about a game of musical chairs!

Getting a touch of humor here, did you ever think about the great coincidence done by the destiny? UNH was founded the same year when the first university in India, the University of Calcutta, was established. Now if that doesn't turn things full circle, I don't know what does.

With the 20th century came a whole lot of transformations. They don't call it the roaring twenties for nothing, folks! UNH just skyrocketed as a well-rounded university offering a variety of courses.

We’re also immensely proud to mention that accreditation was tossed our way. Yep, in 1948 we got a feather in our hat when we were accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.

Fast forward to today and you've got a university immersed in research, woven with a rich history, and yet, ushering a feeling of modernity. The University of New Hampshire's 33,000 strong alumni are scattered across the globe, making a difference, just like they did in their university days.

So, dear Indian parents and high school students, what's the take-away, you ask? The University of New Hampshire is rich in history, and believe me, it's always the old trees that have the deepest roots! What say you pack your bags, pull up your boots and come to join this university that carries an essence of the past, to prepare you for the future? Let's ink this great journey together!
