Once upon a time, well in the year 1969 if we are being precise, a new star was born in the academic sky of Lubbock, Texas. Not just any star, mind you, but a fiery comet that would blaze a trail in the field of health sciences. The honor of naming this star fell upon Dr. M. Roy Wilson, then a young, dynamic and visionary, who christened it Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC).
Now, hold on to your horses, because this star was no ordinary academic institution. From the get-go, it aimed for the moon and beyond. Driven by its mission "to improve the health of people by providing high quality educational opportunities", TTUHSC was quick to establish several schools under its gigantic umbrella. By early 1970s, it was already ticking all the right boxes offering courses in medicine, nursing, and allied health sciences.
Blazing forward into 1979, TTUHSC opens its first ever regional campus in Amarillo. This is a milestone moment for TTUHSC, as it established its commitment to bring health education to every nook and cranny of Texas, and dare we say, the world.
By the time the 1980s start rolling around, TTUHSC was gaining momentum like a runaway train, adding yet another feather to its already decorated cap. In 1983, the School of Pharmacy is established and in 1993, the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences takes root. Whoa Nelly, if you thought the accomplishment express was slowing down, think again.
With the turn of the century, TTUHSC broadens its horizons and starts offering online degrees. That, my friends, is called staying with the times! In 2007, the institution took the bold step starting the only School of Public Health west of I-35.
Within mere 40 years, TTUHSC had transformed from a single institution to a multi-campus university, woven into the fabric of Texas. Here's a jaw-dropping fact: TTUHSC currently has five campuses and serves more than 100 counties. Get your math brain on, that is a whopping 50% of Texas!
Even today, TTUHSC's journey is far from over. As it strides into the future, TTUHSC continues making history. Take for example in 2010, when TTUHSC become the only campus in Texas to house a separate university for health sciences. This unique standing signals TTUHSC's commitment to deliver top-notch education to prepare the finest health care professionals.
No history of TTUHSC would be complete without a mention of its remarkable impact over the years. With an annual economic impact of over $2 billion, it’s no wonder TTUHSC is a powerhouse of significance not just within the education arena, but also within the economy of Texas.
And in case you're wondering how our friends from India fare in this Texan tale, you bet your boots they're thriving. Indian students are not just welcomed at TTUHSC, they're valued for their unique perspectives and contributions. All geared up with dedicated international student services, guides and support, international students like you folks, are set up for success from their very first day.
So there you have it. From a starry-eyed start in 1969 to a trusted name in health education today, TTUHSC continues its march forward. Whether you’re from Texas, from India, or any ol' place on this earth ball, TTUHSC has a place for you in its history, today and tomorrow.
