It all started in 1890, when Indiana Wesleyan University (IWU) was initially known as Marion Normal College. This went on for 22 years until the name changed to Marion Normal Institute, marking the first step in the university's evolution. Interestingly, in 1918, the institute relocated to Muncie, Indiana, to forge a partnership with Indiana Normal Institute. Although this merger didn't last, it served as a stepping stone, leading to the grounds being bought by the state of Indiana, which later laid the foundation for Ball State University.
Now, as the story goes, the Marion citizens appealed to the Indiana Conference of the Wesleyan Methodist Church, who ran the Fairmount Bible School, to shift to the vacant property and establish a normal school. Rising to the occasion between 1918 and 1919, the conference raised a whopping $100,000 to endow the school, offering the first classes by fall 1920.
During the period, from 1920 to 1988, Marion College steadily evolved, gradually increasing its educational offerings, including Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science which first took off in 1921. A Master of Arts in Theology was also introduced in 1924, which was provided without a pause till 1950.
1983 was another major turning point when the university leadership ventured to create programs and degrees for working adults during the evening hours and Saturdays. This decision led to what we know today as IWU National & Global. The move managed to wipe out the school's considerable debt and funded the rejuvenation and expansion of the Marion campus.
By the time 1997 rolled around, most of these programs had become available online. This provided unprecedented access, making it possible for thousands of students from far and beyond to attain an education at IWU.
As the millennial rolled in, there were changes in the university leadership, with Dr. James Barnes stepping in. His transformative thinking saw the college budding into a respected and renowned university. So, in 1988, the college got a new identity - the Indiana Wesleyan University.
Under Barnes' leadership, the varsity went from being a small Christian college to becoming one of the world's largest evangelical Christian universities. On his retirement in 2006, he became the university's first chancellor and served in this capacity until 2010.
In 2008, the Wesley Seminary came into existence. This was a unique and valued addition as it's the first officially affiliated seminary in the history of the Wesleyan Church. By 2012, Dr. David Wright took the reigns and was inaugurated as president in 2013.
The following year was another landmark for IWU when the board of trustees voted to acquire Wesley Institute in Australia, marking the establishment of the institution’s first international campus. Sadly, though, around the same time in 2017, IWU was granted an exception to Title IX, forbidding homosexual activities amongst students.
Fast forward to 2022, Dr. Jonathan Kulaga takes over as the university's tenth president.
