Born from the visionary dreams of a Presbyterian minister, Isaac L. Anderson, Maryville College carved out its humble beginnings as the Southern and Western Theological Seminary in 1819. Before it materialised into the Seminary, Anderson had laid the foundations of knowledge by establishing Union Academy in the heartland of Knox County. His robust conviction in the power of education led him to articulate the pressing need for more ministers in the community.
Stepping up to the climbing demand, Anderson channeled his appeal to the Home Missionary Society and divinity students at Princeton University. In the wake of 1819, with only five men forming the first class, the Southern and Western Theological Seminary came into existence. The Synod of Tennessee not only recognised but also adopted the new educational prodigy, formally naming it in October of the same year.
Less than a quarter century later, in 1842, the Tennessee General Assembly awarded Maryville College its eminent charter, thus marking its baptism into the fraternity of higher education. The emerging institution, now known as Maryville College, began treading the journey towards becoming a beacon of knowledge and equality.
In 2004, recognition came, knocking at the doors of Maryville College as the Race Relations Center of East Tennessee acknowledged its tireless efforts towards "contributing to improving the quality of life for all in East Tennessee”. Rejecting racial segregation from its inception, the College opened its doors to George Erskine, a freed slave, sponsored by the Manumission Society of Tennessee, in the year of its inception, 1819.
The strife of the Civil War brought an unwelcome pause in Maryville College's journey, but on resuming, its commitment to inclusivity remained unwavering. Regardless of race, the new wave of students found the doors of Maryville College wide open, thanks to the efforts of the Freedmen's Bureau.
However, when segregation was imposed by the state of Tennessee in 1901, Maryville College, undeterred, donated a significant portion of its endowment – over $25,000- to Swift Memorial Institute. Swift, its sister school, was a brainchild of William Henderson Franklin, an inspirational figure who was the first African American to graduate from Maryville in 1880. His institute served as a harbor for black students during the turbulent times of enforced segregation.
After the game-changing Brown v. Board of Education decision in 1954, Maryville College wasted no time in once again opening its doors to African Americans, reiterating its undying commitment to racial equality.
The college also led the way for the empowerment of women. In 1875, Maryville College awarded the first college degree to a woman in the state of Tennessee, pioneer Mary T. Wilson, whose brother Samuel T. Wilson later went on to direct the college's vision as its president from 1901 until 1930.
