In the year 1905, something exhilarating happened. The legislative body of Missouri divided the state into five districts. These districts were entrusted with a clear mission - to establish schools for teachers. Now imagine that - schools for teachers! The plot for the Northwest district fell into the eager hands of Maryville, the lucky winner of a fierce competition. And why wouldn't they be victorious? They offered 86 attractive acres of land (a gift from a Methodist Seminary) and a stunning sum of $58,000.
The other worthy contenders were Kirksville, Cape Girardeau, Springfield, and Warrensburg. Each of them later evolved into respected state colleges. But our story centres around Maryville, known then as the Fifth District Normal School. This School immediately rolled up its sleeves and began its mission on June 13, 1906. They focused on teaching those whose job was to shape the minds of young children, ranging from kindergarteners to grade three.
Perhaps you're thinking, what a delightful beginning. But the journey of Northwest Missouri State University didn't stop there. The once small normal school soon expanded to take up the task of teaching up to high school, though later it rescaled to cover kindergarten through sixth grade. This little school had its name glorified in 1919 as Northwest Missouri State Teacher's College. And with a new name came a new right - the ability to confer baccalaureate degrees.
World War II delivered another opportunity for our brave institution. Northwest Missouri State University was among 131 colleges nationwide actively participating in the V-12 Navy College Training Program. This noble initiative provided students with a path straight towards a Navy commission. Talk about stepping up to the plate during wartime!
As the year 1969 dawned, the then Missouri Governor, Warren Hearnes, had a stroke of inspiration. Why not convert the St. Joseph Junior College from a two-year plan into a comprehensive four-year state college? Brilliant! At the same time, interstate expansion bypassing Maryville and Clarinda, Iowa was vetoed. Instead, an area near Council Bluffs, Iowa/Omaha, Nebraska caught their eye.
However, 1972 brought in some tension. The rumors of opening a new state school within 45 miles from Maryville seemed like an insidious attempt to suffocate the blossoming institution and its intertwined town. But fast-forward to August 14 of that anxiety-ridden year, and there was a silver lining. Northwest was uplifted to university status, empowering it to offer master's degrees. Quite a victorious comeback, wouldn't you agree?
Since then, Northwest Missouri State University proudly received the Missouri Quality Awards four shining times. This prestigious recognition bestowed upon them in 1997, 2001, 2005, and 2008, makes them the only educational institution housing multiple Missouri Quality Awards in their showcase.
Remember how technology started revolutionising the world in the 1980s? Northwest was at the forefront of this wave! In 1987, the University launched its Electronic Campus Program, making it the pioneer among U.S. public colleges.
The estate's design, inspired by none other than the Forest Park design showcased at the world-renowned 1904 St. Louis World's Fair! If that doesn't take your breath away, consider this - in 1993, the state legislature gifted Northwest the title of the official Missouri State Arboretum.
