Back in 1887, an important decision was made at the Annual Meeting of the Church of the Brethren. There was a rising need for a beacon of learning west of the Mississippi River. This was to cater to the educational thirst of settlers venturing towards the west. Consequently, the first academic flag was hoisted on September 5, 1888! The infrastructure was modest, featuring a single building serving as a home, a teacher den, and as a treasury of books. Sixty eager minds and seven dedicated educations embarked on this journey together.
As the academic year neared its end, the number of students had already shot up to nearly 200! The seeds sown in the barren land had started sprouting, giving shape to the main building of the college. Fast forward to 1898 and the incomplete, yet fully functional Sharp Hall saw its completion. The establishment was christened as "McPherson College" on February 12, 1898, etching its name in the glorious books of education.
