History Allegheny College

Deep within the veins of what we now know as Meadville, Pennsylvania, lie tales of resilience and growth. Before Allegheny College, this land was a testament to survival. It was home to the Eriechronon community, who were displaced by the forceful Iroquois Confederacy. The Lenape or Delaware Tribe, having endured a similar fate in Eastern Pennsylvania, found refuge in this region. side-by-side with the neighbouring Seneca tribe and other displaced Lenape, they bore the might of oppression under Chief Custalog's leadership and founded Cussewago. This stronghold would later be abandoned and, on May 12, 1788, claimed by David Mead, christening the birth of Meadville.

The rise of Allegheny College hinged on the visionary, Reverend Timothy Alden, a Harvard's School of Divinity graduate in April 1815. While it has been affiliated with the United Methodist Church since 1833, it permitted the pursuit of academia without the hues of religious doctrines. The journey of the first four male students at Allegheny began on July 4, 1816, devoid of formal academic structures. However, within six years, Alden's fundraising efforts began to shape the campus, its first brick being the library, a symbol of early American architectural prowess, designed by Alden himself. This monument of knowledge, Bentley Hall, pays tribute to Dr. William Bentley whose book collection added considerable value to the college.

Amidst the growth, a beacon of achievement was the exchange of letters between Alden and Thomas Jefferson in 1824. Jefferson expressed his aspiration for his University of Virginia to someday emulate the intellectual richness of Allegheny's library. But, as prosperity swelled, so did challenges. Financial crunch and dwindling enrolment cut short Alden's presidency, leading to his resignation in 1831. The following years saw the establishment of the iconic Ruter Hall in 1853.

Progress towards gender equality was on the horizon when Allegheny opened its gates to women in 1870, way before many US colleges. The class of 1875 witnessed a female valedictorian, fanning winds of change. Ida Tarbell, a future journalist who joined Allegheny in 1876, spoke about Ruter Hall in her writings, painting a vivid picture of her precious tryst with books.

In 1905, Alden Hall was erected, showcasing a revamped preparatory school, solidifying the college's growing footprint. It hogged the limelight in 1971 when the film Been Down So Long It Looks Like Up to Me, inspired by Richard Farina’s novel, used the college premises for shooting. The name "Allegheny" became synonymous with the college, connections to a county, river, and mountain range notwithstanding. This bond was so strong that it was fiercely defended even against Penn State when they attempted to change one of their campus names to "Allegheny" in 2006. For Allegheny's president Richard Cook, ‘Allegheny’ was their identity, their brand.

Cook’s tenure marked a surge in fulfilment on many fronts– a fortified endowment, optimal enrolment numbers, innovative programs, and significant campus enhancements. The thriving endowment, backstopped by a $115-million fundraising drive, soared to $150 million. James H. Mullen Jr., who took over as the 21st president in 2008, was riding on this wave of success.

Despite the academic grandeur, Allegheny College remains down to earth, bridging the gap between education and the local economy. It reportedly brings in approximately $93 million to Meadville every year. The bond with the community is further strengthened by the classical music festivals hosted by the college during summers since 2002. Even amidst some situations, like the unintended destruction by a rogue wrecking ball in 2007, they stood together, the incident earning the library's coffee shop the name 'The Wrecking Ball'.

Interestingly, the college has ventured beyond conventional academia by hosting discussions on unique topics like face transplants in 2009. Also noteworthy is Allegheny professor Michael Maniates, a prominent voice in the politics of consumption, joining film projects to advance important discourses. In the present, as environmental concerns grip the world, Allegheny has risen to the occasion. Collaborating with Siemens, they have devised an energy reduction plan for the college, taking a stride towards a sustainable, bright future.
