Back in 1909, an audacious endeavour took flight in the form of Messiah Bible School and Missionary Training Home. Established by the Brethren in Christ Church, it bore roots in the home of their first president, Samuel Rogers Smith. A man of business in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Smith's footprints were deep-rooted not just in his locality but also in the church.
The initial days of the school unfurled in Smith's abode in Harrisburg, but space demands propelled it to new pastures in Grantham in 1911, following the construction of ‘Old Main’, their first campus building. Today, you might land letters at the university's Mechanicsburg address, but the central hub of education beat continues to throb in Grantham.
S.R. Smith, whose heart was as vast as the farmlands surrounding Grantham, donated land for the new campus. His business interests were repositioned outside the city to create an expanse for the educational establishment to thrive and grow. During these foundational years, the school oriented its efforts towards high school curriculum and multiple Bible courses.
Shifting gear in 1921, it broadened its horizons becoming a junior college. It took on a vibrant new identity as Messiah Bible School. The setting expanded over an impressive 375 acres, buzzing with the pursuit of knowledge.
Fast forward to 1950s, and Messiah offers four-year college programs. To mark this evolution, it went through another christening ceremony, coming to be known as Messiah College in 1951. By the late 1950s, the high school program bid goodbye, and a new era of liberal arts programs was ushered in. 1963 witnessed Messiah being credited as a four-year college, further broadening its wings in the liberal arts spectrum.
In the year of 1964, a significant operation shake-up happened as Messiah College took over Upland College in California, consolidating all its operations to Pennsylvania. Only four years later, Messiah College marched into Philadelphia opening a campus in partnership with Temple University. However, this association came to an end by the Spring semester of 2014.
Continuing its expansion, Messiah unveiled its Harrisburg Institute in downtown Harrisburg in 2002. The goal was to create an academic and research foundation that connected students to an urban environment's unique opportunities. The institute also housed up to 25 students, adding another feather in their expanding cap.
Messiah's reputation hit a bumpy road post the 2007 US Justice Department Scandal, particularly involving its alumna, Monica Goodling. Comedic media representatives Jon Stewart and Bill Maher targeted the event to tickle the masses with their satirical comments, pinning Messiah as a “saviour school”!
Messiah's strong ties with the Brethren in Christ Church have persisted, shaping its values and educational ethos over the decades. Although it no longer carries the official baton of the church, its traditions influence the Messiah spirit. Rooted in Anabaptist, Radical Pietist and Wesleyan Holiness movements, the university stands today as a nondenominational Christian institution. It encapsulates a broad evangelical faith base, embracing students and employees from a diverse range of Christian faith backgrounds.

In between honing global leaders, the institution has also been host to several remarkable events. One such noteworthy episode was the Compassion Forum held on April 13, 2008. Messiah opened its doors to a dialogue hosted by CNN commentators Jon Meacham and Campbell Brown, where Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama answered soul-searching questions on Faith and Politics. Despite the invitation, John McCain gave this momentous occasion a miss, due to a scheduling conflict. This forum received national attention, marking a significant chapter in the history of Messiah.
