Picture this - it's the mid-1830s and Montgomery Academy has just been founded on the edges of the bustling city of Clarksville, Tennessee. The school starts small, just a log building. There are grand ambitions for this humble academy, fuelled by the rapid growth of Clarksville's tobacco market and thriving river port. Imagine the grumbles of people wanting the log college to transform into a proper university. Ten years later, in 1848, Tennessee's General Assembly does just that, and the Masonic University of Tennessee is born out of the proceeds from the sale of Montgomery academy's properties.
Enter the year 1855. The reins of the university now lie in the hands of the Presbyterian Church. It came with a change of name too; the institution was renamed Stewart College, honoring its president and benefactor, William M. Stewart. But it's not all smooth sailing. The college faces immense hardships during the American Civil War. Its buildings transform from halls of learning to the Union Army's headquarters. Post-war, the college lies in shambles, but they are not about to give up.
With slow, steady effort and the renewed support of the Presbyterian Church, the college slowly regains its feet. The year is now 1879, and we see Stewart College reborn as Southwestern Presbyterian University. It even adds a School of Theology in 1885 under the guidance of Dr. Joseph R. Wilson - yes, he's President Woodrow Wilson's dad.
Despite these efforts though, the scars of the Civil War persist well into the 20th century. The university struggles with dwindling financial support and inconsistent student numbers. But then, a knight in shining armor arrives. Charles E. Diehl, a pastor, is hired as the college's president by the board of directors. Diehl becomes the much-needed change maker for the university.
From letting women study at the university to introducing an honour code for students in the years 1917 and 1918, Diehl's term as president is marked by game-changing steps that fundamentally transform the institution. His biggest achievement? Implementing the Oxford-Cambridge style of education, which sees students studying subjects individually with their professors.
Diehl's most significant reshape of the university comes in 1925 when he moves the university to Memphis. This move is a turning point in the university's history, bringing an influx of sponsorship and increased student enrollment. The institution starts to grow again - a growth that continues even in spite of the Great Depression and Second World War.
Now, fast forward to 1945. The university, now known as Southwestern at Memphis, sees the retirement of Diehl, succeeded by Dr. Peyton N. Rhodes. Under Rhodes, the university admits the first black students and establishes itself even more solidly with several new buildings and an increased endowment. The college then decides to honor Rhodes by renaming the Institution to Rhodes College in 1984.
Rhodes College continues to flourish, expanding its range of academic programs and offering great internships and research opportunities as well. In more recent years, Marjorie Hass assumes the role of the 20th president in 2017, pioneering her way as the first female president of Rhodes. Jennifer M. Collins then succeeds her in 2021.
And there you have it - that’s the story of how a small log-building academy grew into an incredible, nationally ranked college. Today's Rhodes college is testament to the power of resilience, innovation, and progression!
